The basic principle developed and applied through the project was named training-through-research (TTR). The Baltic branch was introduced by Russian State Hydrometeorological University (RSHU) in 1993 in frames of UNESCO TEMA programme (Training, Education and Mutual Assistance)

The Training-Through-Research (TTR) principle is being developed and applied through the project. TTR programme puts together the advantages of the formal training of undergraduate and postgraduate students and young scientists with the experiences gained in advanced research.

L.Karlin, T.Eremina, A.Ershova (RSHU) The Baltic Floating University gives training for young generation of researchers in collecting and analyzing hydrometeorological and ecological data and in view of promoting regional and inter-regional cooperation between universities that teach marine science and integrated coastal zone management. Between 1993 and 2009 over 270 students and young researchers from 28 countries of Europe, Asia, Africa and South America have participated in the BFU project.

6. L.Karlin, T.Eremina, A.Ershova (RSHU) A recognized BFU peculiarity is a two-ship operation. BFU uses in parallel two training platforms: a big oceanographic vessel for studies in the open Baltic Sea and a sailing catamaran for investigations in its shallow coastal waters.
