Synthesis Reactions!
2
Synthesis Reactions - Combination Reaction
- Multiple reactants combine to form a single product. - A + B → AB - Release energy in the form of heat and light (exothermic)
3
Examples with elements
Sodium + chlorine → Sodium Chloride Carbon + oxygen → Carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide (but not both!) 2Na+Cl2-> 2NaCl CO + O2 → CO2 or CO
4
Examples with Compounds
Calcium oxide + water → calcium hydroxide Sulfur dioxide + oxygen → sulfur trioxide CaO + H2O → Ca(OH)2 2SO2 + O2 → 2SO3
5
The synthesis of Iron Sulfide
Iron and sulfur are heated to form iron (II) sulfide Fe + S → FeS Note that the video uses temperature to increase the rate of reaction and spreads it out to increase surface area (also increases the rate of reaction)
6
Predicting the products
Non-metal + oxygen → nonmetallic oxide nitrogen + oxygen → nitrogen dioxide Metal + oxygen → metallic oxide Magnesium + Oxygen → Magnesium oxide
7
Metal-oxide + water → metallic hydroxide magnesium oxide + water → ?
Magnesium hydroxide! Mg+02 → Mg2+(OH)1- Mg(OH)2
8
Non-metallic oxid + water → acid
carbon dioxide + water →
9
Non-metal + metal → salt
10
Bonus Nitrogen + Hydrogen → ammonia
Ammonia + water → ammonium hydroxide
