What are our aims? 02 01 03 Offer routes to employmen t on release
An ambitious project to use football as a catalyst for change to achieve the following: 01 Engage with rehabilitati on Services on offer in custody 02 Offer routes to employmen t on release 03 Reduce Reoffending
4
Addressing the skills deficit
Education and training programmes are fundamental to reducing re- offending 67% Unemployed at the time of imprisonment 30% Of prisoners were regular truants 49% Of male sentenced prisoners were excluded from school 37% Have difficulty reading 52% Of males prisoners have no qualifications prior to custody (71% of females) 83% Do not have paid employment to go to on release
5
Why do we need to act? This is a problem of huge financial and human cost £15BN 85,000 79,000 men 5,000 women 800 juveniles All but a very few at some stage return to live amongst us
6
£35,721 £35,371 Average cost per pupil at Eton college
Average cost per prisoner These are the financial implications of imprisonment
7
Worrying trend Self Harm Self Inflicted Deaths Low self esteem Boredom
Lack of value Low prospect of employment on release
8
Addressing the revolving door
We need to create conditions that provide a different direction In the first 12 months after release: Adults reoffend at a rate of 63.8% in the 12 months after the release Juveniles (under 18) reoffend at a rate of 41.6% in the 12 months after the release
9
16hr Prison Conditions Environment not fit for rehabilitation
A RECORD HIGH OF 26,643 ASSAULTS IN THE 12 MONTHS TO MARCH 2017, AN INCREASE OF 20% FROM THE PREVIOUS YEAR OF THESE, 3,606 WERE SERIOUS ASSAULTS, UP 22% FROM PREVIOUS YEAR 16hr Average time prisoners spend locked in a cell
10
10 £350K 20 £700K Here is the maths Offenders rehabilitated (1.25%)
Saving to taxpayer If those 20 people don’t reoffend it will change life and that of their partner forever - therefore 40 people benefit If they each have 2 children - 80 people benefit and so on…. 20 Offenders rehabilitated (2.5%) £700K Saving to taxpayer

Everyone loves football
Engagement in sport drastically improves physical and mental health Football is a leveler – Supporters are from all walks of life Football is often used as an ice breaker, especially effective in high octane negotiations to resolve incidents Prisoners might not be considered as numerate but they can calculate goal difference and how many points to beat the drop or win the league easily enough
12
