Exam Skills – Interpreting Data
07 September 2019 Exam Skills – Interpreting Data Learning outcomes I will be able to: State simple conclusions from tables and graphs State more detailed conclusions (2 or 3 mark questions) Respond appropriately to the command words describe and explain Numeracy Objective Ensure graphs and tables have titles and units. REMEMBER: units are put into brackets. Literacy Objective Correct tense and verb agreement. You must use the correct version of the verb to match the tense. E.g. I see / I saw I do / I did. Main errors are: We was Correct to: We were..... Presentation reminders Underline titles and dates. Include full date annotation. Use a pencil and ruler where appropriate for diagrams and tables. BfL reminders Reminder about phones/headphones given at start of lesson. If phones out after, the teacher will confiscate until the end of the lesson. Maintain a calm, learning environment. No eating, drinking or shouting out.

The perfect CONCLUSION should start:
Simple Conclusions The perfect CONCLUSION should start: As __________ increases, _________ _________ Write what the dependent variable is here Choose the right word: increases, decreases or stays the same Write what the independent variable is here
3
More detailed conclusions
As THE NUMBER OF BLADES increases, the OUTPUT VOLTAGE IN VOLTS INCREASES… (1st mark) … up to 4 blades, then increasing the number of blades doesn’t affect the output voltage. (2nd mark) Number of blades
4
More detailed conclusions
As the wind speed increases the power output increases… (1st mark) … up to 14 metres per second where it reaches a maximum power output and stays the same... (2nd mark) … up to 25 metres per second where it drops to zero power output for higher speeds (3rd mark)
5
More detailed conclusions
You could have to write conclusions from graphs as well. As the pH increased the time for no starch to be detected decreased… (1st mark) … up to pH 7.0 where it was 1..5 minutes... (2nd mark) … after pH 7.5 the time increases again (3rd mark)
6
NEVER use the word IT in a conclusion.
More detailed conclusions NEVER use the word IT in a conclusion. As the area increases, it increases. What increases? If there is any doubt you won’t get the mark.
7

15
Directly Proportional
Data is DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL if the graph would come out as a STRAIGHT LINE through the origin… Or if the numbers in the table double in both columns 𝑥∝𝑦
16
Directly Proportional
When 10 doubles to 20, 2 doubles to 4 But when 20 doubles to 40, 4 doesn’t double to 8 (it goes to 16) So the data is NOT directly proportional
17
Directly Proportional
18
DESCRIBE means say WHAT is happening
Describe and Explain DESCRIBE means say WHAT is happening EXPLAIN means say WHY it is happening This type of question DOES NOT need any science knowledge because you just say what the graph, table or diagram shows. EASY This type of question DOES need science knowledge. EASY… if you’ve revised.
19
