Do Now: Answer one of the following questions. 1.) Why do you believe Fences received so many accolades (honors/awards)? 2.) How did August Wilson’s life experiences influence the content of his play, Fences? *Show HW: T-Chart for Act 1, Scene 1. Thursday, March 28th, 2019 Aim: How can we analyze the symbolism of fences and the theme of the pursuit of the American Dream in Act 1, Scene 2 of August Wilson’s play, Fences? Objective:: Students will be able to analyze symbolism of fences and the theme of the pursuit of the American Dream in Wilson’s play, Fences. Agenda A.) Do Now: Turn and talk with your tablemates. Captains will prepare to share their tablemates’ answers with the whole class. B.) Discuss/Share: -Captains will share Do Now answers. C.) Read-Aloud: Read aloud Act 1, Scene 2—pp (roles: Troy, Rose, and Gabriel). Take notes on textual evidence of the characters experiencing fences (divisions/barriers) and pursuing the American Dream. What’s the significance of Gabriel’s role in the play? How does Gabriel influence Troy’s American Dream and create a fence for Troy? D.) Reflections: What were your first impressions of Act 1, Scene 2? What can you predict will happen next?
