2. Objectives To discuss ideas in developing independence in children
Ideas for supporting learning at home

3. Developing Independence
Building independence in children is important to help them take responsibility for their own progress. It encourages pupils to see the value in making their own choices about their futures.

4. Developing Independence
Ensuring that children have responsibilities in the home helps to build their independence.
Possible ways of developing this are:
Cooking once a week. Reading recipes and cooking instructions also measuring ingredients helps with numeracy and literacy.
Ensuring they are organised and have packed their own school bag. Visual timetables in the home can help with this.

Teachers at The Grange work on developing independent learners by:
Giving pupils choices so they can reflect on their own interests and preferences
Encouraging group work so that learners can learn from each other
Collaborate with pupils to set shared learning goals
Involve pupils in lesson planning
Encourage pupils to reflect and plan
Encourage self and peer editing before work is handed in

6. Supporting Learning at Home
English and Literacy
Reading out aloud is really important it not only improves reading skills but also writing skills.
This can be small chunks of text and can be anything from a novel, newspaper, blog or recipe.
Asking questions about what your child has just read will help them to improve their inference and comprehension skills. It will help you to check their understanding of what they have read.

7. Supporting Learning at Home
Maths
Encourage your children to be as fluent as possible with their times tables.
Encourage them to get involved in the maths around them:
Familiarisation with money when at the supermarket, paying a bill or going to the local shop to get milk etc.
Involve them in measuring items whether lengths, weights or capacities – perhaps in the kitchen using recipes.

9. Homework Club
Homework Club runs in S2 after school and is supervised by Teaching Assistants that can offer extra support and help to pupils with their homework.
The sessions can also be used to go over spellings vocabulary or numeracy to help reinforce what is being taught in lessons.
We encourage pupils to try and attend at least twice a week to access the extra support on offer.
