Defining Leadership Leadership + Creativity
As you know, Pilot International has been listening to us. They have created a new coordinator for Leadership Development and have encouraged the various districts to do the same. Rhona Baca Espinoza is this year’s PI Leadership Coordinator, but keep in mind that this position is still evolving. With that in mind, we’re going to talk about leaders in general. In other words, we’re going to start by helping you identify your leadership style currently and help you understand that it takes several kinds of leaders to accomplish club or district goals and objectives. And I hope to give you something new today…something you may not have heard before.

John Maxwell says, “If you invest in your development as a leader, the long-term result is growth. And yes, some are born with greater natural gifts/skills than others, but the real ability to lead is a collection of skills that can be learned and improved.” From The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership If you want to grow this organization, you have to remain teachable To have a teachable attitude: A leader cannot afford to think that they no longer have to grow-that they have arrived-As long as you are green, you are growing; As soon as you are ripe, you start to rot. Overcome Your success-success can hinder teach ability-effective leaders know that what got them there doesn’t keep them there. Swear Off Shortcuts-The longest distance between two points is a shortcut Trade In Your Pride-We have to admit we don’t know everything. You cannot be prideful and teachable at the same time. Never Pay Twice for the Same Mistake-The leader that makes the same mistakes also makes no progress

Leadership Defined The true measure of leadership is influence.
Nothing more, nothing less. Followers in voluntary organizations cannot be forced to get on board. If the leader has no influence with them, then they won’t follow.

Leadership Defined “Leadership from the inside out.” – Kevin Cashman
Authentic self-expression that creates value. Leadership is not simply something we do. It comes from somewhere inside us. Leadership is a process, an intimate expression of who we are. It’s our being in action.

Leadership Defined “Lifestyle that creates both opportunity and momentum for ordinary people to do extraordinary things.” - Jim Smith

Leadership & Creativity
By being creative, growth can continue. Work to make the connection between leadership & creativity. Ask yourself, “How many times is it up to you?” Keep looking for the next perspective.
10
Everyday Creativity Creativity is a matter of perspective.
There’s always more than one right answer. Re-frame problems into opportunities. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Break the pattern. Train your technique. You’ve got to really care.

Leadership & Perspective
The Wheelbarrow Perspective Negativity stifles the positive thinking.

Leadership takes… Insight – self-awareness, understanding others, vision Initiative – Take responsibility & risks Inspiration – communicate & lead others in the right direction Involvement – empower others to use their talents Individuality – be yourself Style With insight you must have a mixture of self-awareness, the ability to understand others, and vision to see the whole picture at any point in time. Leaders with initiative show initiative and value it in others. To improve your initiative, you might - make a list of challenging things you would like to do, but have never done. Then take the initiative and complete one a month for the next year. - Focus your attention on being accountable and show you can be relied upon. An inspiring leader makes people feel differently to the point they are willing to do unusual things. They possess a real passion for what they believe and do. As a leader, you must involve everyone in what you want to achieve. When you empower them, it will ensure they have a personal investment in achieving the results you are after. And be willing to give and receive feedback – either good or bad. Individuality in a leader is knowing where you stand on important issues, having strong personal values and integrity. You set the example and standard that others will want to imitate and follow. Always be consistent. STYLE – Here’s the new stuff (I hope) It takes several styles on a team to accomplish to vision or goals of an organization, because there is no “I” in Team.

SUMMARY Whatever your style or definition – recognize it,
celebrate it, nurture and grow it, and step up to the plate and lead. We can embrace each of these types of leadership styles into our own special leadership style. Each have wonderful attributes But we will be more inclined to lean to one or two of them-recognize your strengths and natural talents and work on these strengths Don’t try and be someone you aren’t Celebrate your uniqueness Make a difference and change this organization!!! Are there any questions or comments?
