2 Step-by-Step Production Plan by D&T Within Schools
Producing a step-by-step production plan helps you to think through the process and also helps to reduce mistakes and errors A production plan may be:- detailed for a particular part of the project or more general for the whole making process It can be written, with or without diagrams; or a flow chart may be produced showing quality control checks Areas to consider are:- Marking out Cutting and shaping Assembling Finishing Specifics might be :- Materials used Tools, processes and equipment used Health & Safety considerations Quality control checks © D&T Within Schools DWS 08/09/2019

3 Step-by-Step Production Plan by D&T Within Schools
Example of a production plan. Producing the legs on a wood lathe - detailed Select 3 pieces of square section material without defects – safer when turning – and 1 for the handle Find the centre of each end by drawing lines from corner to corner with a pencil Plane the corners off the square section material to produce octagonal shaped pieces Place in wood lathe between centres – use a mallet to secure the drive centre in place Adjust the tool rest up to the edge of wood – not quite touching – rotate by hand to ensure it doesn’t snag on any part of the machine © D&T Within Schools DWS 08/09/2019

4 Step-by-Step Production Plan by D&T Within Schools
Producing the legs on a wood lathe (continued) Select the appropriate speed for roughing Wear protective face visor Using woodturning gouge reduce the wood to the required diameter – check this with outside calipers When diameter is consistent along length re-adjust the tool rest to bring it closer to work Reduce the end in diameter so that it will fit into seat. This should be two-thirds the thickness of the seat in length Adjust speed for sanding – wear face mask to prevent inhalation of dust Remove tool rest and shift holder along lathe carriage out of the way so fingers don’t get trapped when sanding © D&T Within Schools DWS 08/09/2019

5 Step-by-Step Production Plan by D&T Within Schools
Producing the legs on a wood lathe (continued) Start with a coarse grit glasspaper and hold gently underneath leg when sanding, NOT ON TOP – gradually use finer grit paper Repeat for each leg and handle Producing the Seat - not as detailed Select a piece of wood large enough to mark out the seat Draw the circle for the seat Cut the seat out roughly using a jig or band saw Mount on faceplate of lathe and adjust tool rest Using a lathe tool work until seat is perfectly round and sand Drill three holes with a forstner bit 120o apart on a concentric circle Glue with PVA adhesive © D&T Within Schools DWS 08/09/2019

6 Step-by-Step Production Plan by D&T Within Schools
Finishing – not enough detail to be useful Sand seat Apply two coats of varnish with a brush Someone with a sound knowledge of woodturning would be able to produce this stool to their own dimensions using this plan of production. Someone with less skill would need more detailed instructions with diagrams to guide them Look at the target audience and their skill level before producing, suitable, instructions for them © D&T Within Schools DWS 08/09/2019
