1 Using Songs and Chants - Conclusion

2 Video Let’s watch this brief conclusion and do a few final activities. Play the video.

3 Review the song from the video
Review the song from the video. Then, write a new verse using the same tune and form. Think about something you can do and something you can’t do. A parrot is a bird that flies. It can’t swim, but it can fly. A parrot is a bird that flies High in the sky. Application 1 Now we’re going to practice what we’ve learned in the Using Songs and Chants video with the Our World Materials. You have five minutes to write a new verse using the same tune and form. Think about something you can do and something you can’t do. Remember the example we saw in the video: Landry is a boy who jumps. He can’t fly, but he can jump. Landry is a boy who jumps High in the air! Give participants five minutes to make up their own verse by coming up with something they can and can’t do. After five minutes, have some of them share their songs with the group.

4 End of the day chant: Application 2
Have participants write a new chant in pairs (or small groups). It’s a great idea to use a chant at the beginning of class and at the end of class. However, students can get bored if you use the same chant all year long. You are going to create a new end-of-the-day chant that you can use after your students have mastered the one in the video.  Now work in pairs or groups of three, and create a new four-line chant. It should have the following qualities:  • It should have four lines. • The second and fourth lines should rhyme. • It should end the class on a positive note. Give participants five minutes to come up with a new chant. After five minutes, have each pair or group share their chant and have the whole group learn it.
