Session Outcomes Participants will…
Align the sample goal setting form with the SMART goal process Select a domain on the Framework that will help you grow your teaching practice Write a teaching goal/or revise an existing goal using the SMART goal process Recognize that goal setting can be an integral part of improving teaching

[Tonya] Introduction to goal setting in teaching - Briefly discuss growth mindset, reflection in teaching - students change, content changes, we change along with it…. You are all here for a reason.. you aren’t forced to be here. etc. What that tells us in TILT is that you want to grow as a teacher…. -because you showed up here today, that tells us that you are already reflecting on your teaching and that we don’t have to convince you that you need to improve. We already know that you want to improve.

Reflect... Specific Measurable Achievable Realistic/Relevant/Rigorou s Time-bound Talk with a partner about a goal you have accomplished in your life. It can be as simple as “I learned to make lasagna” or “I finally made it to Spain” or more complicated, “I built my dream house.” [Tonya] Objective: Reflect upon a past accomplished goal to assess if it was a SMART goal. Pairs/triads Choose a goal that you’ve achieved You were successful with this goal - with your partner, described the components of the SMART goal that you used Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound You were successful with this goal – with your partner describe the components of a SMART goal you utilized.

Read the descriptions of the two domains you chose and narrow them down to one. [Jen] [Handout the whole Framework] Find the 2 domains you chose on the Framework. Read through them and narrow goal choice to one. NOTE: They can choose any 2 domains, not limited to Classroom Climate or Instructional Strategies.

Goal: Improve classroom climate so that students feel safe enough to share ideas even if they make a mistake. SMART Goal: Integrate at least three opportunities for students to interact with each other every class so that they feel more comfortable participating on a regular basis. Review the sample goals or begin to write a SMART goal for your teaching. [Jen] Discuss blank goal-setting form and the departments that have already started using it.
