Abrams Scholars Program
Dr. Jacque Cole, Director Undergraduate research awards (with stipend!) for outstanding BME students at NC State Mentored projects for October-May Competitive application process Usually ~15 students each year Call will go out soon ( from Lesley Hubbard) with a list of projects from faculty Schedule a time to meet with faculty and discuss Applications due early- to mid-September Dr. Frank Abrams Professor Emeritus BME/BAE I’m here to talk to you about the Abrams Scholars Program. It is directed by Dr. Jacque Cole, who unfortunately couldn’t be here today. The program is named after Dr. Frank Abrams, Professor Emeritus in BME and Biological and Agriculture Eng at NC State. He helped found the BME department and was a leader in the early development of opportunities for BME students. The Abrams Scholars program provides outstanding BME undergraduate students at NC State with the opportunity to conduct hands-on, research projects while receiving a stipend. The selected students are mentored by BME faculty (at either NC State or UNC) on projects that span the school year (~Oct-May). The applications are very competitive. We usually fund ~15 students each year. The call for applications will go out very soon, probably sometime next week, so look for an from Lesley Hubbard about this. The will include a list of possible projects to work on with specific faculty. If you’re interested in applying (and you should be), pick some projects from that list that sound interesting to you, and then schedule a time to meet with the faculty and discuss. This will give you a better idea of which projects you want to request, which faculty/labs would be a good fit for you, and you can get more details about the projects, which will help you build a stronger application. The applications will be due in early- to mid-September. The specific date will be in that from Lesley. Make sure you take advantage of this awesome opportunity to get real, hands-on research experience and potentially even be an author on a conference abstract or paper. More specifics about how to contact faculty…specific , showing you did some work to find out details on your own; include resume; request time to meet and provide some possible times over the next week; be persistent!; etc. Awesome opportunity to get real research experience and potentially be an author on a conference abstract or paper
