1 In vivo feasibility of image-guided transvaginal focused ultrasound therapy for the treatment of intracavitary fibroids  Arthur H. Chan, Ph.D., Victor Y. Fujimoto, M.D., Donald E. Moore, M.D., Robert T. Held, Marla Paun, B.S., Shahram Vaezy, Ph.D.  Fertility and Sterility  Volume 82, Issue 3, Pages (September 2004) DOI: /j.fertnstert Copyright © 2004 American Society for Reproductive Medicine Terms and Conditions

2 FIGURE 1 Image-guided transvaginal HIFU device for treatment of uterus. (a) An abdominal image probe and a transvaginal HIFU applicator are integrated in a device that has the potential for treating uterine fibroids. Position sensors allow the HIFU focus to be tracked for accurate treatment planning and targeting. (b) This image shows the positioning of the device and region of visualization using the abdominal image probe. The HIFU applicator, along with surrounding pelvic structures (including the bladder, uterus, and bowel), is within the image plane of the image probe. 3 FIGURE 2 Characteristic HIFU lesions in uterus body at various time points. (A) Immediately after treatment; (B) 2 days after treatment; (C) 7 days after treatment; (D) 30 days after treatment. Lesion A shows a necrosed center surrounded by a bright red ring of congested blood. Lesion B shows an increase in the congested blood region. Lesion C shows that most of the congested blood region has become necrosed and that the majority of the lesion is necrosed tissue. Lesion D shows that by day 30 the treated area has been reduced to a small red spot. 4 FIGURE 3 Progression of the HIFU-treated area over time. (a) Day 2: inflammatory cells are present throughout the treated region, as shown by the arrows. (b) Day 7: small areas of smooth muscle repair (r) can be seen. (c) Day 30: smooth muscle bundles have been formed surrounded by scar tissue.
