1 Year 12 Transition Work A’level Design and Technology
These tasks should take at least 5 hours to complete.

2 Task 1: Two Point Perspective
Using two point perspective produce a realistic drawing of this Dyson Vacuum cleaner. Include colour and shade. Draw guide lines and a horizon line to help. Remember - To use boxes as guides when drawing circles and cylinders. Draw lightly and go over lines when you are happy that they are correct. All vertical lines remain vertical! When shading, imagine the light is coming from one direction. Used the ‘full’ range of light and shade. (Press on hard in the dark areas and leave light / highlights white.) Helpful techniques can be found here at technologystudent.com

3 Task 2: Third Angle Orthographic Projection
Orthographic drawings enable the manufacture to see the product from a variety of angles. Top, Front, Side. Drawings are drawn to scale. Detailed measurements can be included. You are to produce a 3rd angle orthographic drawing of an everyday household object- Kitchen appliance or handheld device for example. Use guide lines as shown on p5 to reduce the amount of measuring A ruler is essential for this task. Helpful techniques can be found here at technologystudent.com

4 Task 3: Exam questions Discuss how the Just in Time (JIT) system is used to achieve lean manufacturing in industry. (This is a 6 mark question) Discuss the advantages of using coal as a source of energy. Discuss the disadvantage of using solar power as a source of energy (10 marks in total for these two questions)

5 Task 4: Produce a 3D drawing using CAD
Produce a drawing of a product using a CAD programme. You may have already used programmes such as Inventor or Google Sketch Up- you can produce it using one of these. However you will need to use Fusion 360 during the course so it would be helpful to download it from the link below and familiarise yourself with it during the summer. If you haven’t used a one before it is important you get yourself familiar with a CAD programme. An excellent one is Autodesk Fusion 360 which is free to download. The link is below. There are tutorials on here and useful projects on youtube. There are a variety of excellent tutorials on the Autodesk website but also on youtube. The link here is to a guy who has posted tutorials on how to learn the software in 30 days- a sketch a day . They are approx. 6-10mins long here The more you play around with these CAD programmes the better you will become. This is an essential skill to have for this course.
