4 Dichotomous Key A method for determining the identity of something by going through a series of choices At the end, you arrive at the correct name of the item. Dichotomous means "divided in two parts"

5 How to USE a Dichotomous Key
Read both choices in the pair carefully. If you are unsure of with choice to pick, follow both paths (separately) to see where they lead you. Double check your choices along the way! Make sure you understand all of the words used. Look up those science words! Measure, measure, measure! Never “eyeball” or estimate a measurement given. If you get the same name for 2 different items/organisms … one of them is WRONG!

6 How to MAKE a Dichotomous Key
1. Make a detailed list of characteristics of your items. 2. Use the most general trait to start. Divide your items into these two groups. 3. Each next step should divide the groups into two smaller and smaller groups, until everything is correctly identified. 4. Remember, there is more than 1 correct way to classify any given group of items! 5. Each step in your Key can only have 2 choices!
