Adamant there were communist spies in the government McCarthyism Campaign against potential communist spies in America that led to people being investigated and blacklisted Not just in government, but celebrities and members of Hollywood too (producers, writers, directors, etc) “Hollywood Ten” Why? What impact do they have on society?

TECHNOLOGY Atomic bomb blueprints Scientific innovations Sputnik, first satellite ever, made by USSR, 1957 This put American citizens off guard! We created NASA to combat the Soviets, but are they beating us in the space race?

7 HUAC (House of Un-American Activities Committee)
A committee of the U.S. House of Representatives that investigated allegations of communist activity in the U.S. during the early years of the Cold War Called citizens to testify in high-profile hearings before Congress Was an intimidating atmosphere, often produced dramatic but questionable revelations about Communists infiltrating American institutions and well- known citizens HUAC’s controversial tactics contributed to the fear, distrust and repression that existed during the anticommunist hysteria of the 1950s

You will be given the name of a potential spy. It is on you to determine whether or not they truly are a communist spy. Using the chromebooks, create a profile (google doc) of your person including the following information: Image of the person Who are they? What do they do for a living? What is the evidence for them being a spy? What is the evidence against them being a spy? Final report. State in complete sentences whether you think they are a spy or not and WHY. Pull from the information you researched.

14 The Venona Papers The Venona Papers were a set of documents that America intercepted that had codes (which translated to the names of the Americans) who were spying for the Soviet Union. These documents spanned from 1948 to the 1980s. How could this have heightened the tension between the US and the Soviet Union?

15 The Rosenbergs This couple is famous for being the first US citizens convicted and executed of espionage They never admitted any wrong doing Some people felt that they were the victims of the mass hysteria, and that the punishment was too cruel The venona papers confirmed that the Rosenbergs were spies

After learning about the Cold War, McCarthyism, the HUAC, the venona papers, and after doing your research on a potential spy in the 1950s, do you believe that the Red Scare was justified, or just a mass hysteria? Why or why not? Answer in complete sentences, using your notes as evidence. Needs to be a paragraph (half a page)!
