1 SAFE DRIVING RULES AND REGULATIONS
CHAPTER 4 SAFE DRIVING RULES AND REGULATIONS

2 SPEED CONTROL (P58) Speeding is a common cause of fatal and other types of accidents. A good rule is to keep up with the flow of traffic at any legal speed. behind-deadly-paul-walker-crash-source-tells-2D

3 IT IS IMPORTANT TO SLOW DOWN:
Never drive faster than conditions safely allow, regardless of posted speed limit! IT IS IMPORTANT TO SLOW DOWN: On narrow or winding roads Intersections and railroad crossings Hills Sharp curves Where pedestrians are present Wet or slippery roads o

4 NEW JERSEY SPEED LIMITS (P58)
25 MPH- Business and Residential, School Zone 55 MPH-Certain state highways, all interstates 65 MPH- Certain interstate highways (as posted) **You pay double fines for exceeding the 65 MPH limit by 10 or more MPH. Also, double fines apply to most other moving violations committed in a 65 MPH zone.

5 DRIVING TOO SLOWLY (P59) Keep up with the flow of traffic.
Accidents can be caused by someone driving too slow. Law prohibits blocking traffic through slow driving.

6 Safe Corridors (P59) This law DOUBLES fines on certain state roads for a variety of driving offenses. This includes speeding and aggressive driving. Roads are chosen based on stats that show high rates of crashes (50% higher) than other roads in the state.

7 Safe Corridors Route 1 between Lawrence and South Brunswick, and between South Brunswick and Edison Route 9 from Lakewood to Sayreville Route 22 between Branchburg and Newark Route 40 between Hamilton and Egg Harbor Route 46 from Netcong to West Paterson Route 47 in Millville and Vineland Route 73 between Voorhees and Maple Shade Route 206 through Montgomery and Hillsborough.

8 Passing (P 60) -No passing in either direction.
-Passing allowed on the dashed line side. - Passing allowed on either side.

9 Passing Only When Safe (P61)
Most passing should be on the left. You may pass on the right if there is more than one lane going in the same direction. (ie: move from left lane to right lane to go around someone) You may pass on the right if the car ahead is making a left turn and there is room to go around them on the shoulder. DO NOT drive off the road to pass someone.

10 DO NOT PASS: (P61) On a hill or curve In an intersection
At railroad crossings On a narrow bridge When a sign prohibits it In a tunnel or underpass

11 KEEP TO THE RIGHT (P61) NJ law: Keep right except when passing

12 YIELDING THE RIGHT-OF-WAY (P61)
Always yield to emergency vehicles when their lights or sirens are on. Yield to pedestrians. Mail trucks Buses pulling into traffic. Vehicles already in the intersection.

13 People in a Crosswalk (P62)
You must stop for a person in a crosswalk. Watch for people when making a right on a red light. Failure to stop carries a fine up to $500, 25 days in jail, license suspension up to 6 months and 2 points.

14 Controlled Intersections (P62-3)
A single white line on the road means the car must stop there for a traffic light or sign. At a controlled intersection, yield to the driver on the right if you both arrive at the same time.

15 Controlled Intersections (P63)
When turning left, always yield to oncoming traffic. Remember: It is illegal to drive on private property to avoid a traffic signal or sign!

16 Uncontrolled Intersections (P63)
When two or more roads join and there is no traffic signal or regulatory device. When approaching the intersection, be prepared to yield or stop for traffic traveling from the right or left. You must yield to traffic when entering from a private road or driveway. Stop completely at all blind intersection.

17 CIRCLES (P63) There are no set rules for driving around a circle.
Use common sense and caution. Check all signs and other cars before entering the circle.

18

19 Entering Highways (P64-5)
Obey speed limits on entrance ramp. Speed up to the flow of traffic. Try not to come to a stop in this lane. Enter the right lane when it is safe.

20 Leaving a Highway (P65) Start slowing down to enter the deceleration lane. Obey the posted speed limit. If the exit is on the left, look for signs directing traffic to that lane If you miss your exit, go to the next one. Never back up on an exit ramp.

21 Curves (P67) When driving in a curve, your car wants to continue going straight. You must adjust your steering and speed to make the car go around the curve safely. Slow down BEFORE entering the curve.

22 TURNING RIGHT (P68) Unless a “No Turn On Red” sign is present, you may turn at a red light after coming to a stop and checking traffic. When Turning: Get into the right lane Signal turn 100 feet in advance Slow down to complete the turn Don’t turn wide or cross lane markings

23 TURNING LEFT (P69) From a 2 way road onto a 2 way road:
Signal the turn Keep close to the center line Yield to oncoming traffic Turn into the left bound lane DO NOT cut corners or turn into the outside lane
