2 Project and Contact Information Project Name, Number, Family, and Track: Low Energy Printing P09505 Printing Systems Printing and Imaging Systems Faculty: Guide: Bill Nowak (ME) Consultant: Dr. Marcos Esterman (ISE) Customer: Xerox Corp. - Making Elements and Integration Lab

3 Project Description Project Background: Problem Statement:
Large share of xerographic printer power is consumed by the toner fusing-subsystem when the toner is heated above its melting point. Problem Statement: Reduce the energy consumption of xerographic digital printers by re-considering the design of a low power, non-thermal fusing system. Project Goals: Research of existing non-thermal fusing systems. Test varying roller pressures to determine minimum pressure needed to fuse loose toner to paper. Generate multiple design concepts using the PUGH method. Develop technical sketches and drawings for proposed designs. Test design concepts. Document findings. Determine best design based on customer needs and toner and paper quality.

4 Project Status Week 1 Accomplishments: Week 1 Challenges:
Determine customer (Bill Nowak and Xerox) needs - preliminary loaded on EDGE Develop project plan (using MS Project): Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) Project long schedule Milestones Establish team norms/values and plan - loaded on EDGE Week 1 Challenges: Understanding how xerographic digital printers work. Understanding how non-thermal fusing works and determining what technology/patents currently exist.
