For every 1 part of cordial, we need 6 parts water.

4 2 : 5 Or pink paint. For every 2 parts of red paint, we need 5 parts of white paint.

5 What is the highest common factor (HCF) of 6 and 8?
12 2 10 4

12 8 24

12 What is the highest common factor (HCF) of 24 and 36?
12 8 24

13 To simplify or cancel down ratios, we need to divide by the highest common factor (HCF) of both parts.

14 16 : 20 4 Simplify: What’s the highest common factor of 16 and 20?
So divide both numbers by 4

15 Simplify: 16 : 20 ÷ 4 ÷ 4 4 : 5

16 6 : 27 3 Simplify: What’s the highest common factor of 6 and 27?
So divide both numbers by 3

17 Simplify: 6 : 27 ÷ 3 ÷ 3 2 : 9

18 Show me a ratio which simplifies to 2:7
What is wrong: To simplify the ratio 32:48 keep dividing both sides by 2 until you can’t do it any more True / Never / Sometimes: To simplify the ratios keep dividing both sides by 2 until you can’t do it any more

19 What is the same / different:
4:5 and £4:500p 2:3, 34:51 and 3:2 Convince me that 19:95 is equivalent to 1:5

38 Recipes Restaurants have to make money.
If too much food is made, it will be thrown away. If not enough food is made, the customers won’t come again. In either case, the restaurant will fail. So, calculating the right amounts is essential!

39 Here are the ingredients needed to make ratatouille for 4 people.
Recipes Here are the ingredients needed to make ratatouille for 4 people. To find out how much of each we’ll need to make it for 6 people, we need to use ratio. Ratatouille Serves 4 2 large aubergines 4 small courgettes 2 yellow peppers 4 large tomatoes 5 tbsp olive oil 1 onion 3 garlic cloves

40 Recipes The ratio of people in the recipe and people we have is 4 : 6
We can simplify this by dividing both amounts by 2 – we get 2 : 3 To calculate the scale factor, simplify so the ratio is in the form 1 : n The ratio is now 1 : 1.5 so the scale factor is 1.5

41 Recipes For 6 people: Ratatouille x 1.5 2 x 1.5 = 3 large aubergines
Serves 4 2 large aubergines 4 small courgettes 2 yellow peppers 4 large tomatoes 5 tbsp olive oil 1 onion 3 garlic cloves 4 x 1.5 = 6 small courgettes 2 x 1.5 = 3 yellow peppers 4 x 1.5 = 6 large tomatoes 5 x 1.5 = 7 ½ tbsp olive oil 1 x 1.5 = 1 ½ onions 3 x 1.5 = 4 ½ garlic cloves
