3 Figure 2 Relation of granulosa-cell inhibin α-subunit mRNA and oocyte and embryo characteristics. The relation between gene expression in granulosa cells and characteristics of the oocyte contained in the same follicles were analyzed. Of all targets examined, only inhibin α-subunit mRNA levels were associated with oocyte and embryo characteristics; these levels were significantly higher in healthy, mature oocytes. In contrast, oocytes producing the healthiest embryos came from follicles with significantly lower α-subunit expression compared with abnormal embryos; this suggests that although some α-subunit expression is associated with normal oocyte maturation, excessive α-subunit is associated with abnormal embryo development. Levels of mRNA were expressed as ratios to β-actin for each target, log transformed, and corrected for age on the basis of linear regressions; they are shown as multiples of the age-specific median (MoM).
