1 Society, Culture, and The Brady Bunch
By Dylan Biers and Gretchen Heegeman

2 Socialization: An Overview
Socialization: installing individuals into a society’s morals, values, social roles, language, and motives. There are three levels of socialization Primary Secondary Anticipatory There are also three different categories that relate to socialization. Culture Family Gender roles

3 Family: Level I Families are the first step into integrating a person into a society. The family is where a person first learns about love, friendship, discipline, and what is right and wrong in their society. The family is also responsible for creating the personality of the child. The family that raises the child will influence what their child will grow up to be.

4 Family The Brady family from the Brady Bunch, is a perfect example. These children were raised on morals and values that were incorporated into everyday life. Such as, do not let your ego take away from academics, or do not underestimate a job.

5 Schools: Level II School is where children learn about the outside world. They will develop social skills such as dealing with difficult people, pleasing people, working with people, and listening to others.

6 Schools For example, in the episode of the Brady Bunch, ‘Getting Davy Jones,’ Marcia tells the school she is getting the singer, Davy Jones, to perform at prom. However, she worries about disappointing the school when she has difficulty getting ahold of the famous singer. Marcia is faced with the problem of dealing with the possibility of an angry group of teenage girls. Facing these problems will teach people how to deal with these problems after school.

7 Anticipatory: Level III
Anticipatory socialization is when someone who isn’t in any group or career takes on the social values of the group or career they aspire to join.

8 Anticipatory Anticipatory socialization is when someone who isn’t in any group or career takes on the social values of the group or career they aspire to join. A prime example of anticipatory socialization, is someone who aspire to be in a musical or other art related career. When you grow up learning an instrument or using a brush, you tend to appreciate the arts more than other things and get along better, and hang out more with people who also participate in art.

9 Culture: Level IV The culture you grow up in also affects your social views in a large way. The area in which you grow up in and the people who surround you and their views can leave a great effect on how your social views develop.

10 Culture In the Brady Bunch
The Brady Family represents the culture of their time, the 1970’s. The 1970’s displayed their own type of culture. The Brady Family shows the ‘hippie style,’ that came with the Vietnam War and Woodstock. They also show us what a ‘perfect family’ should look like in the 1970’s. Mike and Carol live happily together, the six children get along great… most of the time, and Alice is equally loved by the family. It could be said that this show was made for parents to learn how they should live, or get out of the rut of their own marriage problems.

11 Gender Roles Gender roles are an important part of society today and have developed greatly as the years have come and gone. Gender roles are described as a stereotype someone is expected to fill based on their gender. Because of the generalization in this description, the true meaning fluctuates as time passes and becomes harder to follow as people diversify.

12 Gender Roles In the Brady Bunch, Mike Brady is a working man, while Carol, his wife, is a stay at home mom with a housemaid, Alice. Mike is the only one who brings in money, while Alice is paid by Mike, and Carol takes on the roles such as being a member of the Parent- Teacher Association (PTA).

13 How this applies to you All of the previously mentioned methods of socialization have molded your current views on most of everything. Whether it be your family, culture, school, or even the society around you. You have been built from the ground up based on how society has been living forever, and how their views have evolved as time passes. It is our job to help set the foundation for how the next generation of society will live, and how accepting they may be to change.

14 Put it into action In the workplace, you can…
Treat your employees equally, no matter the gender. Challenge your employees who deserve a challenge. Acknowledge your employees who strive for a promotion. Respect the culture and beliefs of your employees. If they believe in a male-dominant society, adjust their work schedule to accommodate to their beliefs.
