Wednesday, April 3rd, 2019 Aim: How can we analyze the symbolism of fences and the theme of the pursuit of the American Dream in Act 1, Scene 4 of August Wilson’s play, Fences? Objective:: Students will be able to analyze symbolism of fences and the theme of the pursuit of the American Dream in Wilson’s play, Fences. Agenda A.) Do Now B.) Read-Aloud: Read aloud Act 1, Scene 4—pp (roles: Troy, Rose, Cory, Bono, Lyons, Gabriel and Stage Directions). Take notes on textual evidence of the characters experiencing fences (divisions/barriers) and pursuing the American Dream. How is Rose revealing her independent, feminist self? What is Troy’s depiction (portrayal) of a wife in his American Dream? How has Troy broken barriers? D.) Reflections: What were your first impressions of Act 1, Scene 4? What can you predict will happen next?
