2 Figure 1 Live imaging and confocal analysis reveal cellular mechanisms of connective tissue regeneration in salamander digit tips and zebrafish fins. (A) Fates of connective tissue cells during salamander digit tip regeneration. Chondrocytes do not contribute to the regenerate and pericytes only regenerate themselves. In contrast, dermal fibroblasts and periskeletal cells can form their own kind plus chondrocytes. (B) In zebrafish fins, proximodistal identity of fibroblasts is erased by amputation and determined in the early blastema. The position of fibroblasts in the early blastema predicts where their progeny will end up in the regenerate (red = distal, green = proximal). However, proximally located clones can contribute to all proximodistal positions after a second amputation.
