Direct act of knowingly presenting someone else’s words, creativity, research, findings, or ideas as your own (exact or paraphrased). 5 APA Style: Terms Common Knowledge Paraphrasing Misattribution
Standard dictionaries or encyclopedias; sources containing information considered to be general. Paraphrasing Stating the thoughts of another author in your own words. (Pocket Guide, pp. 6-8) Misattribution Unintended plagiarism; oversight in mechanics (citing), omission, or incorrect information.

Periodicals – magazines and newspapers published at regular intervals Journals – magazines and newspapers dealing with a particular subject Electronic Library Articles (website), newspapers, e-books, personal or government websites. LIRN (McCann), Google Scholar, Internet search

7 APA Style: Overview Finding Sources Check your source using the 4 C’s
Credibility – verify credentials and expertise of author(s) (i.e., field of study, education, etc.) Collegiality – verify how well the selected work is situated among other common sources in the research area; does a grounded argument exist? Currency – does the selected work represent an awareness of recent and ongoing research? Context – is the content of the selected work relevant to the essay topic?

How do you use an in-text citation? There are two methods for using parenthetical citations Enclose the author(s), the publication year, and the page number(s) in parentheses Paraphrase – (Locher, 2002); (Locher & Eyman, 2006) Quotation – (Giannetti, 2005, p. 4) Introduce the source directly in the text Diamond (1999) claims… Jones and Baker (2016) asserted…

11 APA Style: References Formatting
Write “References” at the top (center) of the page. Do not italicize, bold, underline, or use quotation marks. List sources alphabetically using the last name of the authors. Use the hanging indent feature for the second and all subsequent lines of the reference (0.5 inch margin from left margin) Double-space all references.
