Study Group 5 has two working parties.
WP1 studies protection of telecommunication systems and telecommunication personnel and users of telecommunication networks from lightning, induction from power lines.
WP2 studies emission, immunity and security of telecommunication systems.
EMC issues dealing with home networks are studied in Question 8.
Also, it is necessary to include studies about protection from lightning and power line induction. The earthing system is essential for the countermeasure for the protection from lighting.
These aspects are studied with relevant questions such as Q.4 and 6 and in WP1.

4. Organization of the work of SG5
Working Party 1/5 “Damage prevention and safety”
WP1/5 is responsible for studies relating to protection of telecommunication installations in order to reduce damages and achieve safety of telecom personnel and users of telecom services.
Work areas:

5. Organization of the work of SG5
WP2/5 is responsible for studies relating to achieve EMC of telecommunication installations and safety of telecom personnel and population against electromagnetic fields.

Q6/5 - EMC issues arising from the convergence of IT and communication equipment
Q7/5 - Human exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) due to radio systems and mobile equipment
Q8/5 - EMC issues in home networks
Q9/5 - Generic and product family EMC recommendations for telecommunication equipment

6. Organization of the work of SG5
Working Party 3/5 “ICT and climate change”
WP3/5 is responsible for studies relating to ICT, environment and climate change, development of methodologies for evaluating the ICT effects on climate change and publishing guidelines for using ICTs in an eco-friendly way.
Work areas:

7. Joint Coordination Activity on ICTs & Climate Change (JCA-ICT&CC)
The purpose of the JCA-ICT&CC is:
to provide a visible contact point for ICT and Climate Change activities in ITU-T;
to seek co-operation from external bodies working in the field of ICT and climate change;
to enable effective two-way communication with these bodies.
External bodies include representatives from relevant SDOs such as IEC, ISO or relevant academia, consortia or fora.

8. SG5 REGIONAL GROUPS
In accordance with Resolution 54 (creation of regional groups), and Resolutions 44, 59 and 72 (WTSA-08), Study Group 5, at its meeting in May 2009 created the SG5 Regional Group for Africa.
Three other regional groups:

Regional group for America
Regional group for Asia Pacific
Details in paragraphs 2 to 6.
While some may think that the past is the past, wisdom is also what we learn from the past.
These paragraphs make interesting reading and should be kept in mind to avoid repeating the same mistakes

9. SG5RG for Africa Objectives
Encourage national authorities, operators and consumers from developing countries to work together and better contribute to ITU-T activities on the achievement of EMC in telecommunication installations as well as on EMF and human health
Enhance the collaboration on all activities related to “Climate change” in conformity with SG5 extended mandate

10. TERMS OF REFERENCE (1/2)
To encourage active participation of African administrations, regulators and operators to the work of SG5 and to report to them SG5 outcomes and deliverables
To boost discussions on EMC and EMF effects on health challenges facing administrations, operators and regulators in the continent
To encourage participation of African countries to workshops and other ITU-T Study Group 5 events
To reflect the relevant priorities of the continent as per SG5 mandate
To encourage African countries to contribute to the development of new/revised ITU-T Recommendations on EMF effects and report on their respective “Climate change” activities

11. TERMS OF REFERENCE (2/2)
To disseminate relevant information provided by ITU-T on EMF standards, compliance and measurement methods applicable to telecommunication networks, to the safety of telecommunication personnel and users against current and voltages, and telecommunication personnel and the general public from electromagnetic fields generated by telecommunication installation
To provide a better follow up from and to the focal points identified on “Climate change” activities launched by ITU
To collaborate with African Telecommunication Union (ATU)
Act as a liaison body between administrations, operators, regulators and ITU-T in matters relating to Environment and Climate Change.

The objectives of the regional group for this new study period :
Improve our organization and working method to produce relevant deliverables;
Recruit new members that can contribute to the work of RGSG5 and foster participation;
Ensure consistency in participation and deliverables;
Improve our involvement in climate change work;
Establish relationship with regional organization for the implementation of relevant SG5 standard as a directive.

Working group 1 on Damage prevention and safety and EMF
Working group 2 on ICTs and climate change.
