1 How to achieve the Assessment Objectives in Literature Paper 1.
Follow the steps on how to write a clear, relevant response to a question in literature. The sentence frames are adaptable for analysing Shakespeare and other novels too.

2 The Assessment Objective: AO1
AO1: (out of 12 marks) To respond to the task (in all paragraphs, from the topic sentence to the final sentence) and the text Basically, make sure that you answer the question (the main character/theme/idea). Also, ensure that address how this character/theme is presented in the text by using a range of relevant quotes.

3 How to achieve AO1 In the extract, Dickens presents Scrooge as an outsider in society because he is described as being “as solitary as an oyster”. At this point, Scrooge is a somewhat isolated person as he is alone and like an animal. Therefore, he is not respected as a human being. State your argument about the writer DOES and WHY (because). Now, give me some context of this quotation; help me understand the meaning of it in relation to the plot.

4 The Assessment Objective: AO2
AO2: (Out of 12 Marks) To explain the ways that the writer uses language, structural and form choices to create meanings. To comment on the effects of language on the readers To use appropriate terminology Zoom into a keyword Identify the technique – explain what it creates ideas of Prove what the word means to you. Link the meaning of the word: show why the word directly supports your view.

5 How to achieve AO2 Step 1: Step 2: Step 3: Zoom into a keyword
Work out its exact terminology(is it a noun) What does this create ideas of (effect)? The writer uses the adjective of “solitary” in the simile “as solitary as an oyster” in order to compare Scrooge to being an isolated animal, as though he is an outcaste in society. Step 2: Explain what you understand by your keyword(s) Firstly, the word “solitary” creates ideas of loneliness and isolated while “oyster[s]” are known to live their life independently in a small place. Step 3: Then, link it back to the question: Therefore, Dickens uses the animal imagery and adjectives through the simile in order to expose Scrooge’s isolation in the Victorian plot during Christmas

6 The Assessment Objective: AO3
AO3: (Out of 6 marks) To link ideas in the text to wider social issues/events/culture/attitudes. Consider how far the character is a representation of people or issues in wider society at the time. What might the writer be using this character as a tool to communication

7 How to achieve AO3 Dickens’s presentation of Scrooge is strongly isolating especially as in Victorian England, Christian festivals were most widely perceived as being an important time for togetherness – his loneliness as an “oyster” would have been unusual and questionable. What are the expectations during the era? Therefore, how would the character come across during this time?

8 All together now… In the extract, Dickens presents Scrooge as an outsider in society because he is described as being “as solitary as an oyster”. At this point, Scrooge is a somewhat isolated person as he is alone and like an animal. Therefore, he is not respected as a human being. The writer uses the adjective of “solitary” in the simile “as solitary as an oyster” in order to compare Scrooge to being an isolated animal, as though he is an outcaste in society. Firstly, the word “solitary” creates ideas of loneliness and isolated while “oyster[s]” are known to live their life independently in a small place. So, Dickens uses the animal imagery and adjectives through the simile in order to expose Scrooge’s isolation in the Victorian plot during Christmas. Dickens’s presentation of Scrooge is strongly isolating especially as in Victorian England, Christian festivals were most widely perceived as being an important time for togetherness – his loneliness as an “oyster” would have been unusual and questionable. This is a good start for an essay, how it’s up to you to embed linkers such as ‘moreover’, ‘this portrayal of Scrooge is also reinforced as’, ‘furthermore’ and ‘however’ in in order to deepen your ideas or develop alternative ones !
