Overall survival of patients experiencing different levels of chronic pain and requiring varying amounts of opioids (defined as described in the Methods section and Table 1) was estimated using the Kaplan–Meier method. The presence of higher levels of pain, greater opioid requirement, or both was strongly associated with shorter survival. Statistical analysis is provided in the Results section. The panels show the overall survival of patients stratified by opioid requirement and (a) severe pain during the first 90 days of chemotherapy, (b) moderate-severe pain during the first 90 days of chemotherapy, (c) severe pain during the entire clinical course (from initiation of chemotherapy to death or last follow-up), and (d) moderate-severe pain during the entire clinical course.
