Section 1: Physical properties of matter
Chapter 2: Matter Properties and changes
2
A) Physical Properties
3
1) Matter: anything that has mass and takes up space
4
2) Physical Properties: Properties that can be observed or measured without changing an object
5
a) Observable Properties: Size, Color and Smell
6
b) Measureable Properties: Melting and Boiling Point, Attraction to Magnets
7
3) Texture: How the surface feels,eg. rough, smooth, waxy, powdery
8
4) Malleability: ability of a substance to be hammered into thin sheets or shaped
9
5) Ductility: ability of substance to be pulled into thin threads without breaking
10
6) Brittle: Object break easily (opposite of malleable and ductile)
11
7) Density: the amount of mass that fits in a given volume (mass / volume) d=m/v
12
8) Buoyancy: The ability to float in a liquid or rise in a gas
13
a) Objects with a density lower than 1 float in water
14
a) Why do you think that happens?
15
b) Objects with a density greater than 1 sink
16
c) Gases with density lower than air rise
17
B) Physical Changes: change the physical properties of an object, but it does not become a different substance.
18
B) Physical Changes: change the physical properties not the substance.
19
1) Example Paper cut into tiny bits
1) Example Paper cut into tiny bits. each piece is still paper, the size changed
20
2) Example Erosion of large rocks and mountains turned into smaller pieces
21
3) Aluminum rolled into sheet, changed its shape
22
4) Copper pulled in threads for wiring
