Digitizing the Dissertation Process
The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences provides unsurpassed support to its Ph.D. students, which allows them to focus on their scholarship, successfully complete their education, and find rewarding careers. Each doctoral student receives an annual stipend ranging from $31,000 to $35,850, plus free tuition and comprehensive health care for all students and their families. Yale knows of no other peer school that does this. Over six years, the total cost of support equals nearly $410,000 for a single Ph.D. student. For a student with a family, the support totals more than $490,000. Yale incorporates teaching into the graduate student curriculum not for budgetary reasons, but to help our world-class student scholars to gain valuable experience that their future employers will want. This makes graduate students categorically different than Yale’s full-time university employees. Teaching is an important part of what it means to be a graduate student. But teaching is part of one’s professional academic training, and it is only a segment of the graduate student experience. Over the course of six years, doctoral students gain valuable teaching experience as part of their training, by devoting no more than a sixth of their time to teaching, and in many cases far less. Digitizing the Dissertation Process
Facts – Ice Breaker *Admittance to Candidacy Dissertation Progress Review *Manual Submission of Dissertation Online Notification of Readers *Dissertation published *Manual to Digital The dissertation should demonstrate the student's mastery of relevant sources and methods and should make an original contribution to knowledge in the field. Normally, it is expected that a dissertation will have a single topic, however broadly defined, and that all parts of the dissertation will be interrelated, but can constitute essentially discrete units. Beyond this principle, the faculty will apply the prevailing intellectual standards and scholarly practices within their fields in advising students with regard to the suitable scope, length, and structure of the dissertation, including what constitutes an original contribution to that field. In accord with the traditional scholarly ideal that the candidate for a doctorate must make a contribution to knowledge, all dissertations that have been accepted by the Graduate School are published on microfilm by ProQuest and then deposited in the Manuscripts and Archives section of the Sterling Memorial Library.
