Friday, April 5th, 2019 Common Core Standards: RL , RL , and SL Aim: How can we analyze the symbolism of fences and the theme of the pursuit of the American Dream in Act 1, Scene 4 of August Wilson’s play, Fences? Do Now: Answer one of the following questions. 1.) How do you feel about Troy’s parenting decision to remove Cory from the football team? 2.) How can you compare and contrast parenting in 1957 with parenting in 2019? *Show HW: Vocabulary Flashcards for Lists 5, 6 and 7. Friday, April 5th, 2019 Aim: How can we analyze the symbolism of fences and the theme of the pursuit of the American Dream in Act 1, Scene 4 of August Wilson’s play, Fences? Objective:: Students will be able to analyze symbolism of fences and the theme of the pursuit of the American Dream in Wilson’s play, Fences. Agenda A.) Do Now and Captain Sharing: Turn and talk with your tablemates. Captains will prepare to share. Captains will share with the class. B.) Work Period: Students will work on the T-Chart for Act 1, Scene 4—pp The T-Chart must be shown for class credit today. A T-Chart must contain FOUR quotes (1-2 sentences each). TWO quotes to support the symbolism of fences (divisions; barriers) in the scene and TWO quotes to support the characters’ pursuit of the American Dream. Each quote must be have SPA (Statement introduced, Proof, and Analysis). Here’s an example of SPA: Troy questions why there’s a division between the whites and people of color in the work place. “How come you got all the whites driving and the colored lifting?” (p. 2). This evidence proves that Troy has the courage to break down barriers. C.) Reflections: What were your first impressions of Act 1? What can you predict will happen next in Act 2?

3 Comprehension Check: How well you understand the tasks today: Analysis of evidence of symbolism and theme in Act 1, Scene 4 in Wilson’s play, Fences SELF-ASSESS: How easy/ difficult was that task?
