“We must take students from where they are and carry them as far as they can go.”
Dr. Dallas Herring
4
Why does completion matter?
A brighter future Workforce needs Degree holders Completers Our future depends on helping more students succeed.
5
What are Guided Pathways?
Review of the College-wide approach to student success Providing: Fewer choices and Clearer program maps Leading to transfer or the workforce
6
Ensure that students are learning
With clear program outcomes: aligned to employer and/or transfer institution expectations engaging and applied learning experiences effective instructional practices

GPS and RISE Developmental Education reform cannot happen in a vacuum.
It’s vital to know: What pathway a student is on And ensure the math and English courses they take connect to their program of study and their career goals

Changes in Developmental Studies
New for Spring 2019 Fall 2018 Last semester for DMA’s and DRE’s for the pilot colleges NCDAP will no longer be used at the pilot colleges Students will be advised using multiple measures such as unweighted HSGPAs, SAT, ACT, CCRG, GED scores (using the GED scores is new) If a student has a HSGPA within the last 10 years, the student will be placed based on unweighted HSGPA in 3 different areas: curriculum course without a co-requisite curriculum course with a co-requisite transition center If a student’s HSGPA is more than 10 years old, the student will be required to take the NROC Placement test in math and English

SAM Sam is an AAS student who entered 2011FA. He has credit for DMA 010 and DMA What should he do to complete his MAT requirement? HS GPA 2.500 transcript Grad date 6/11/11 4th math? ACT/SAT/GED Math ENG/Read CCRG/ Transition Ctr Transfer credit/AP/IB Dev Ed DMA-010/020 Gateway MAT MAT-110
22
Sam’s Plan for Spring 2019 He will be required to take the MAT-110 with co-req because the graduation date is in the last 10 years and he did not qualify for multiple measures.
23
TERRY HS GPA 2.0 transcript Grad date 6/12/09 4th math? ACT/SAT/GED Math 20 ENG/Read 16 / 19 CCRG/ Transition Ctr Transfer credit/AP/IB Dev Ed DMA-010/020/030 Gateway MAT MAT-110 Terry is a transfer student for the Spring 2019 term who has DMA credit. He needs to take his required math and ENG 111.
24
Terry’s Plan for Spring 2019
Terry can take ENG 111 with a co-req due to his ACT ENG 16 score because it is an OR versus an AND for ENG and READ ACT scores. He can take MAT 110 without a co-req due to the credit for DMA
25
BARBARA HS GPA transcript Grad date 6/12/89 4th math? ACT/SAT/GED Math ENG/Read CCRG/ Transition Ctr Transfer credit/AP/IB Developmental ED MAT-060,070,080, ENG-080 Gateway MAT MAT-143 Barbara is recently divorced and going back to school in spring She wants to get her AAS in Business Administration and then transfer to Franklin to finish her Bachelor’s degree. What do you advise her to take?
26
Barbara’s Plan for Spring 2019
Barbara can take ENG 111 with a co-req because of ENG-080 credit . She can take MAT 143 without a co-req because of MAT credit.

Why Corequisite Remediation?
Too many students end up in traditional remediation, and success is unlikely once they get there.* 1 in 3 recent high school graduates – those who should be most prepared for college – end up in remediation 56% of African American students, 45% of Hispanic students and 35% of White students are placed into remediation 55% of Pell grant recipients are placed into remediation Nationally, just 20% of remedial students in community college go on to complete the associated introductory (gateway) course within 2 years
