1 FCR-STEM Integrated Biology ICAD 3 October 24-28 , 2016
Instructor: Dr. Adam Santone, FCR-STEM Science Supervisor: Millard Lightburn, Ph.D. Curriculum Support Specialist: Daniel Gangeri This is the first FCR STEM session out of a total of 8 sessions. The session will be led by Dr. Adam Santone, from FCR STEM. Department of Science

2 Session Goal Provide a rigorous, content-driven, inquiry-based professional development series to biology teachers in Miami Dade County. As part of the efforts to increase student success in biology, the Department of Science and Florida State University’s FCR-STEM program have collaborated to provide a rigorous, content-driven, inquiry-based professional development series to biology teachers Department of Science

3 Course Overview: The FCR STEM Biology is a 60 hour professional development which will be held locally in Miami and offered over multiple days. It will focus on two areas: 1.The Diversity and Ecology and 2.The Integrated Cell Biology The Diversity and Ecology institute emphasizes that heredity, reproduction, and the interdependence of living organisms contribute to evolution, which is the ultimate explanation for the diversity of life on The Integrated Cell Biology Institute will offer life science teachers the opportunity to learn fundamental biological principles that apply to human health and disease Department of Science

4 Course Requirements Complete Follow-up in My Learning Plan
Survey Requirement: Pre and Post survey completion and Attendance: mandatory attendance are required at the eight (8) professional development sessions. Classroom Implementation Complete Follow-up in My Learning Plan There are 4 basic requirements that must be completed: Pre and post survey Attendance to all sessions, including summer sessions Classroom implementation Complete follow up in My Learning Plan for Master Plan Points Department of Science

5 Attendance Attend only one of the sessions offered in October (10/24, 10/25 and 10/28/16) Hours: 8:30 to 3:30 pm Attend only one of the sessions offered in December (12/5, 12/6, and 12/8/16) Hours: 8:30 to 3:30 pm Attend the entire summer session (June 12, 13, 14, 15, 19 and 20, 2017).  Hours: 8:00 am to 4:30 pm  at Ronal Reagan Senior High Participants are required to attend all eight sessions. Session one was held in October, session two will be held in December and sessions 3-8 will be held in June at Ronald Reagan Sr. High Department of Science

6 Benefits $750 stipend upon completion of ALL program requirements including attending the PD training days, the post-tests, and selecting the lessons that the participant plans on using in their classroom. M-DCPS will award 60 Master Plan Points for participants who complete the program. In addition to benefits listed here, participants will also have access to additional benefits: Access unique curricular resources along with access to the FCR-STEM/MySTEMKits 3D printed kits and curriculum 2. Receive probeware/sensors kits that will be used for conducting experiments in the classroom. 3. Receive training to different freely available software applications related to their field. 4. Receive the FCR-STEMLearn Certificate after completing all the required phases. Department of Science

7 AGENDA ICAD 3: Integrated Biology
Overview of FCR-STEM Integrated Biology Cell Theory Genetics Concepts Mitosis and Meiosis Reflection and MLP Department of Science

8 CELL THEORY All living things are made up of cells.
Cells are the basic units of structure and function of living things. New cells are produced from existing cells. With the discovery of the cell was closely associated with the discovery of the microscope. In 1600 Englishman Robert Hooke and Dutchman Anton Van Leeuwenhoeck by utilizing an early microscopes were the first to observe cells. In 1838 German botanist Mathias Schleiden stated that all plants are made of cells. In 1839 German Biologist Theodor Schwann stated that all animals are made of cells In 1855 German Physician Rudolf Virchow concluded that new cells come from division of existing cells. Department of Science

9 Genetics Concepts Mendelian Genetics
Vocabulary: Genes, Alleles (dominant, recessives). Probability and Punnett squares Homozygous and Heterozygous Phenotype and Genotype Modern science of Genetics was founded by Austrian monk Gregor Mendel, who carried out his work with peas. He addressed fertilization through concepts of pollination and cross-pollination were introduced and also hybrids. His second law is called Principle of Dominance, which states that some alleles are dominant an others are recessive. Punnett Squares: uses mathematical probabilities to help predict the genotype and phenotype combinations in genetic crosses. Department of Science

10 Participants had the opportunity do use R-Fiddle to practice programming skills by running codes to generate graphs with genetic concepts. Department of Science

11 Cell Division Eukaryotic Cell Cycle: has four phases: G1, S, G2 and M
Phases of Mitosis: -Prophase: chromatin condenses into chromosomes -Metaphase: chromosome in center of cell, -Anaphase: sister chromatids separate -Telophase: chromosome at opposite end Cytokinesis: Formation of daughter cells G1 is also know as Cell Growth, S Phase deals with DNA replication, G2 preparing for Cell Division and M phase is Cell Division. Mitosis: Through four phases, it leads to the formation of daughter cells identical in chromosomes count to parent cells. Department of Science
