Measure length (m/cm) and convert units
Measures and Data Measure length (m/cm) and convert units Starter Know 3x table Simmering – to use this starter, drag this slide to the start of Day 1 Children sit in circle. 2 children stand back to back. Say a 3 x table question, e.g. 4 times 3. First to turn around and say the correct answer wins and stays up. Choose another child to be the challenger. Vary vocabulary, e.g. multiplied by, times, lots of etc. Keep pace quick. Year 3

Let’s look at this metre stick.
Day 1: Measure, compare, add and subtract lengths; Know that there are 100cm in a metre; Use a ruler to measure lines. Let’s look at this metre stick. It is divided into centimetres (cm). How many cm are in a metre? In 2 metres? Where would 50cm be on the metre stick? Year 3

Which would be more than 1m? Which would be less than 1m?
Day 1: Measure, compare, add and subtract lengths; Know that there are 100cm in a metre; Use a ruler to measure lines. In pairs, look around the room and think of objects that you could measure. Which would be more than 1m? Which would be less than 1m? Let’s make a list on the flipchart… Year 3

How many cm in 1m 70cm? How many cm in 2m? How many cm in 1m 34cm?
Day 1: Measure, compare, add and subtract lengths; Know that there are 100cm in a metre; Use a ruler to measure lines. How many cm in 1m 70cm? How many cm in 2m? How many cm in 1m 34cm? How many cm in 2m 25cm? How many cm in 1m 3cm? Organise children into 2 teams. Check answers to the questions on this slide and draw out and correct any misconceptions. Award 1 point if correct. Repeat with the other team. Then choose two children from one team to measure an object from the flipchart list, using a tape measure, for a bonus point. The other team choose someone to check it is correct. Record lengths that children measure in a table (see resources). How many cm in 1m 67cm? Year 3

metres and centimetres centimetres.
Day 1: Measure, compare, add and subtract lengths; Know that there are 100cm in a metre; Use a ruler to measure lines. Now let’s measure the objects we listed on the flipchart... We can record their lengths in metres and centimetres or in centimetres. Today would be a great day to use a problem-solving investigation – Hands and Fingers– as the group activity, which you can find in this unit’s IN-DEPTH INVESTIGATION box on Hamilton’s website. Alternatively, children can now go on to do differentiated GROUP ACTIVITIES. You can find Hamilton’s group activities in this unit’s TEACHING AND GROUP ACTIVITIES download. WT: Measure heights of each other (with support). ARE/GD: Measure and comparing heights. Year 3

What units of measurement did we use?
Day 2: Measure, compare, add and subtract lengths; Know that there are 10mm in a centimetre; Use a ruler to measure lines. What units of measurement did we use? What things did we measure yesterday? Today we are going to measure our feet! What units will be best to measure this length? Why not metres? Year 3

We can also use millimetres to be more accurate.
Day 2: Measure, compare, add and subtract lengths; Know that there are 10mm in a centimetre; Use a ruler to measure lines. We can also use millimetres to be more accurate. There are 10mm in 1cm. What if it was 10cm long? This ruler is 5cm long. How many mm is that? Year 3

If a pencil was 4cm 8mm long what would that be in mm? If a rubber was
Day 2: Measure, compare, add and subtract lengths; Know that there are 10mm in a centimetre; Use a ruler to measure lines. If a pencil was 4cm 8mm long what would that be in mm? If a rubber was 2cm 3mm long what would that be in mm? If someone’s foot was 16cm 3mm what would that be in mm? That’s more accurate than 16 or 17cm! Children can now go on to do differentiated GROUP ACTIVITIES. You can find Hamilton’s group activities in this unit’s TEACHING AND GROUP ACTIVITIES download. WT: See ARE but can measure to nearest cm. ARE: Working in pairs to measure each other’s feet, see ‘Are both the same length?’ Resource sheet. GD: As ARE then repeat with their hands. Year 3

Problem solving and reasoning questions
Measures and Data Unit 1 Problem solving and reasoning questions Draw a wiggly line of about 10cm in length. Use a piece of damp string to help you measure it accurately. Write its length in cm and mm. Repeat this trying to draw a wiggly line of exactly 10cm. True or false • Ten lots of 100mm is the same as 1 metre. • Half a centimetre is 50mm. • There are 200mm in 20cm. • 5 metres is longer than 5000mm • The average domestic cat is about 40cm, tip of nose to end of tail. Problem solving and reasoning Answers
Draw a wiggly line of about 10cm in length. Use a piece of damp string to help you measure it accurately. Write its length in cm and mm. Repeat this trying to draw a wiggly line of exactly 10cm. Observe how children set about the task – do they accurately align the damp string along their wiggly line? Mark the end of the line before they straighten the string to measure? When straightened, do they accurately position it alongside a ruler? Can they use mm as well as cm to get an accurate length? True or false • Ten lots of 100mm is the same as 1 metre. True: 10 lots of 100mm is 1000mm (or 100cm) which is the same as 1 metre • Half a centimetre is 50mm. False it is 5mm • There are 200mm in 20cm. True, since 1cm = 10mm • 5 metres is longer than 5000mm. False, they are the same since 1m = 1000mm • The average domestic cat is about 40cm, tip of nose to end of tail. False – around 40-50cm but without the tail. Year 3
