4. Requirements for Scholarship Application
Review a patient experience that has an impact on you and your education

5. I had a goal to improve the scholarship program and make it something for the student winners to be proud of. I personally love Case Studies and know that all the Michigan schools require some sort of student case study for clinical credit. I meet with Jan Field, PhD, RRT, then DCE for Muskegon Community College and pitched an idea of creating a student case study competition. He created the application process, case study requirements and initial rubrics, I created the rules.

6. Rules
The panel of judges will be composed of MSRC leadership who are NOT affiliated with a school
The student needs to submit a written case study prior to the competition
If too many case studies are submitted, the judges will determine who will verbally present at the conference.
So we were ready to go. Jan sent out the Case Study requirements to all Michigan school Program Directors. I was on the MSRC Program Committee so I made arrangements for the case studies to receive time at the annual conference. I chose the panel of judges. I had Carl Haas, a MSRC Past President and researcher at University of Michigan, Steve Hamick, the MSRC President and educator at a large East side hospital and me, the MSRC Past President and educator at a large west side hospital as the judges. We had 4 case studies submitted and we allowed all 4 of them to present. I sent copies of the case study to the other judges prior to the competition so they could review them. I had copies printed for the competition and rubrics ready.

8. The room was wonderful, it was tiered seating with tables on every level. We had over 100 people in the audience, many of them managers and directors. The students were very nervous but did a great job. Marshall from MCC presented on a patient with CF on NIV, Tracey who came in second presented on a patient with rabies contracted from a bat bite, Shemika presented as a first year student on a COPD patient and Jason Blonshine won the competition with a presentation on a trauma patient who was ventilated via the oscillator.

Secret Russian Judge
We needed to refine out rubrics, we added professional dress to it and we added a tie breaker. We used the paper submitted as our tie breaker. It was want ultimately made the decision between Jason and Tracey. I also added the second year a “secret Russian Judge” as she likes to be known. Val Willis works for the U of M Research department helping with the development and completion of research studies. I requested she serve as an unknown judge in the back of the room and help with the decision making. It was really tough being a judge.

10. Year 2
We again had 4 applicants with 3 case studies. Mott Community College had 2 students, Tami Blackmore and Brenda McComb work on the case study together and presented as a group. One student took case of the patient at the transferring hospital and the second student took care of the patient at the receiving hospital on transfer. They presented arrested in cath lab and was transferred to be treated with hypothermia. Shemika from Kalamazoo Valley Community College presented as a second year student and presented a case study on an infant with RDS. And Cindy Faust from Jackson Community College presented on an ARDS patient treated with ECMO.

11. We involved the program directors and clinical coordinators more
We involved the program directors and clinical coordinators more. We also promoted it more to the managers and directors. Shemika actually used the case study as a portion of her job interview.
