Lesson 5 9/8/2019 Brainstorm for one minute – some ideas that students might come up with depending on their prior knowledge: Digital citizenship Staying safe online Not sharing personal information online Not posting anyone’s private information online Avoiding viruses and malware that can damage devices Online etiquette Not cyberbullying anyone using the Internet texting and using social media watching videos playing video games keeping ourselves and others safe when we use digital media, including:

Lesson 5 9/8/2019 Rules to Stay Safe Online Respect others Protect your privacy Choose your words carefully Think before you click! Discuss:: Cyberbullying Flaming Trolling Effective communication Profanity Racism, other prejudice Escalation and SBT What if you get really angry at something someone says online. Do you then have a right to call them names? What if the person doesn’t know who you are – maybe you’re in a video game using an unrecognizable handle. Is it then ok to call them names? When do these rules NOT apply? –NEVER.

5 Digital Safety Vocabulary
Cyberbullying: This is when a person intentionally hurts another person by spreading rumors about them, threatening them, or harassing them using social media or texting. Trolling: This term means intentionally typing inappropriate, offensive, or wild comments on a social media platform in order to provoke a reaction. Flaming: On social media, this term is used to describe typing inappropriate, rude, or profane comments made for the purpose of insulting or hurting someone.
