Someone who is “highly renowned and prosperous”
Must fall from fortune
Has a tragic flaw: a character flaw that causes the hero’s undoing; a weakness (i.e., pride, jealousy)
Somewhat responsible for own downfall
Recognizes flaw after downfall and accepts consequences (may be enlightened by experience)
Suffering arouses sympathy from the audience
Audience can relate to hero being “human”
