PHYSICO-CHEMICAL STUDIES ON BENNITHORA DAM GULBARGA DISTRICT, KARNATAKA. K. VIJAYKUMAR, RAJASHEKAR M., SHASHIKANTH M. AND VASANTHKUMAR B. Department of Zoology Gulbarga University Gulbarga KARNATAKA

INTRODUCTION: Limnology plays an important role in the decision making process for problems of pollution control and aquaculture practices.

MATERIALS AND METHODS The Bennithora Dam is near Gulbarga city (760-04’ to ’ and ’ to ’). This reservoir spreads over 45 sq. miles. The maximum depth is 25 feet during monsoon. Water samples were collected on monthly basis and Physico-chemical parameters were estimated by the Standard Methods (APHA,1985).

Conclusion All the parameters are with in the permissible limit. Chloride is even less than desirable. Nevertheless few stations have shown higher values than the maximum permissible limit. Ammonical nitrogen is slightly higher than maximum permissible limit. This is signal/ indication of pollution. Though the reservoir is productive, due to sewage and fertilizers it is slightly turning towards pollution.
