2. Author’s Background Born in Joplin Missouri
His parents divorced when he was little.
Lived with his grandmother until he was 13.
Moved to Lincoln, Illinois and then to Cleveland, Ohio with his mother and step dad.
Began writing poetry in 8th grade.

3. Contributions He is arguably the father of Jazz Poetry.
And is regarded as the Leader of the Harlem Renaissance.

4. Awards 1926- The Witter Bynner Undergraduate Poetry Prize.
1935- A Guggenheim Fellowship, which allowed him to travel to Spain and Russia.
1941- Fellowship from the Rosenwald Fund.
The Anisfield-Wolf Book Award.
1960- The NAACP Spingarn Medal for distinguished achievements by an African American.
1973- The first Langston Hughes Medal was awarded by the City College of New York.
