3 Dates- Kharjura (Phoenix sylvestris)
Rasa- sweet Guna- heavy, oily Virya- sweet Vipaka- cold Effect on dosha- vatapittashamaka, balya (improves energy) Fruits, leaves and roots are used as medicines Classified under drug groups of shramahara (alleviates tiredness) and vrinhaneeya (nourish body tissues and weight gaining)

4 Ruchikara- improved appetite
Hridya- good for heart, cardiac tonic Tarpana, pushti- nourish all seven tissues. Wasting disorders, tiredness, under weight, anaemia Tushti – contentment Shukrala- improves quality and quantity of sperms Raktapitta shamaka- all kinds of bleeding disorders

5 Remedies Tummy ache with indigestion and constipation in children-
Finely chop 5-6 dates 1 teasp ghee. pinch of black pepper powder, mix all ½ -1 teasp of mixture with warm water 1-2 times a day Constipation- Soak a handful of dates in water at night, eat in the morning or make a fine syrup Date, almond and milk shake Date sugar is a good substitute with iron for sugar.

6 Nutritional supplement for pregnant women, to gain weight, low energy, sexual dysfunction-
Chop around 15 dates 10 tea spoons of ghee pinch of ginger powder, cardamom powder mix well & store this in a jar in room temperature. 1 tea spoon morning. Not suitable for diabetics and high cholesterol Acidity related with palpitations - finely chop 2 fresh dates and mix it with a spoon of honey

CHAG, CHHW, CHPN, CHTL, CHBK, CHPK, soma jam, chyavana prash, YRGO, CHGO Classified under the following grops deepaniya shula prashamana (pain relieving) krimghna (destroys worms) shiro virechanopaga (removes vitiated doshas from head and neck through nasya )

9 Different types Black pepper- dried with skin after boiling Green pepper- dried unripen, with skin White pepper- dried without skin Red/ orange pepper- dried ripen, with skin (Schinus molle)

11 Properties and uses Rochana (improved taste)- loss of appetite, loss of taste sensations Dipana, pachana Chedana (scraping)- high cholesterol, atherosclerosis, obesity Shoshana (dry out excess kapha/ secretions), kaphahara (expectorant-removes kapha)- asthma, loss of appetite due to excess kapha, diarrhoea

12 Pittakrut- increase the functions pf pitta- digestive issues, liver disorders
Janthu nashana- alleviates worms and their environment Vishama jwara nashana- effective for various types of fever Vayu niwarana- alleviate vata Chakshushya- good for eye disorders Hridroga hara- helps in curing heart disorders

13 Contraindications Avrishya – anaphrodiasiac- specially when combined with other hot potency ingredients. Eg: trikatu Excess use/ long term use – increase pitta Pitta dominant people can experience nausea, vomiting, gastritis, abdominal cramps, watery eyes

15 Properties and uses Kasa swasahara- relieves cough, cold- light and sharp properties remove adhered mucus Rasayana (rejuvenate), medhya (increase brain function)- wasting disorders, increase memory Mutrala- diuretic –urinary disorders, calculi Dipana, vatanulomana, mridu rechana (mild purgative)- loss of appetite, constipation, incomplete evacuation

16 Yakrit uttejaka (stimulates liver), plihavriddhihara (helps enlargement of spleen)- anaemia, blood disorders Krimighna- removes worms and their environment Shulaprashamana- relieves pain. All kinds of vata disorders Vrishya (increase libido)- specially male infertility, premature ejaculation Stimulates/ contracts uterus Balya- provides energy by nourishing all seven body tissues Kushtaghna- skin disorders

Synonyms- deva kusuma- flower of deities Chandana pushpa- flowers with fragrance of sandalwood Rasa- bitter, pungent Guna- light, oily Virya- cold Vipaka-pungent Effect on dosha- pacify kapha and pitta

Relieves bad breath and removes sliminess of mouth Good for eyes Deepana, pachana, ruchya (improves taste)- nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, bloating Abdominal pain Respiratory disorders- asthma, cough, cold, hiccups, chronic respiratory disorders

19 Nutmeg and mace - Jaiphala - Myristica fragrance

20 Ingredient in CHPN Rasa- bitter, pungent Guna- light , sharp Virya- hot Vipaka- pungent Effect on dosha- pacify vata, kapha Myristica malabarica (Bombay nutmeg)is the most common adulterant.

21 Properties and uses Grahi- absorbing/ drying- phlegm disorders, diarrhoea associated with bloating and watery stools Mehaghna- useful in diabetes and urinary disorders Deepana, rochana (improves taste), ruchikrut (improves appetite)- digestive issues, nausea, vomiting Krimihara- worm infestations Hridya – cardiac tonic

22 Shoshahara- relives dehydration, wasting
Peenashara- good for allergic rhinitis Varnakrit- Improves skin complexion and tone Vrishya- aphrodisiac. Improves the quality and quantity of sperms Vishapaha- removes toxins, antidote Thrushapaha- alleviates excess thirst

23 Some remedies Insomnia- warm milk with a pinch of nutmeg powder or
2 drops of nutmeg oil+ 1 tablesp olive oil- massage forehead before sleep Diarrhoea- ¼ teasp nutmeg powder with 1 teasp honey- at anytime. Max twice a day Vomiting/ nausea – ¼ teasp powder with ½ teasp lime juice Joint or muscle pain- 1 teasp cardamom oil+ 1 tablesp coconut/ sesame oil- mix, warm and apply

24 Mouth wash for toothache and bad breath-
¼ teasp powder boil in 1 cup of water for about 5 minutes or 2 drops of oil in ½ cup of luke warm water Toothache- add few drops of nutmeg oil on cotton wool and place it on tooth cavity Add into oily, high protein meals, sweet dishes to add taste and smell. Helps digestion and delay in absorption of fats and sugars Over consumption and aggravate pitta

25 Coconut- narikela (Cocos nucifera)
Pacify vata and pitta and increase kapha Tender coconut water- sweet, cold, light to digest, pacify pitta, diuretic, hydrates body, cooling, helps to balance electrolytes- nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, skin disorders, acidity, constipation, UTI, tiredness Mature coconut water- acidic, increase pitta, constipative (vishtambhi)

26 Excess use of coconut water can aggravate kapha- can cause cold, sneezing, cough
Inflorescence is grahi (absorbing)- bleeding disorders specially for heavy menstruation, blood and mucus diarrhoea, diabetes, polyuria Coconut pulp, milk & oil- aphrodisiac. Heavy to digest specially thick milk. Specially effective for male fertility. balya- increase strength and immunity

28 Coconut oil Virgin- best for internal and external use
quick dry process- pulp is dried quickly and oil is expressed by compression (cold compress) wet mill process- milk is extracted, cooked for long hours and oil is filtered Refined- made with dried coconut meat (copra) needs to be treated as there is more chance of contamination during drying process expose to high heat which reduces smell and taste chemicals can be used to get the maximum extract and to increase the shelf life

Taste- bitter Guna- heavy, oily Virya- cold Vipaka- sweet Effect on dosha- Pacify pitta and vata Vrinhana- nourish all seven dhatus Balya- increase strength Keshya- good for hair Dantya- strengthen teeth. Clears oral cavity

30 Remedies 2 teasp virgin coconut oil for 1 cup rice- for mal nourishment, pacify vata Burning sensation of eyes, blisters of chicken pox, shingles, skin disorders, burns- wash with coconut water Acidity, heart burn- coconut water / rice porridge with coconut milk Urine infections with burning feeling- drink coconut water Poisoning- vomiting with coconut milk

31 Hair oil- 1 bottle of coconut oil, 2 teasp fenugreek seeds, vetiveria root (1/2 bulk), 8-10 curry leaves. Cook all in low flame for 20 minutes and filter. Hair falling, dandruff, dry scalp Narikela lavana (coconut alkali)- gastritis, acidity Black oil collected after burning coconut shell- skin disorders Poisoning- vomiting with coconut milk Extract thorns from skin- mix some grated coconut with sugar, apply and leave it over night

32 Green leaf porridge with coconut milk
Ingredients (3 servings) ½ cup rice, 3-4 garlic chopped, 1 teasp chopped ginger, salt to taste ½ cup coconut milk 2 cups of green juice extracted from 1 handful dandelion leaves, 1 handful kale, 1 handful curry leaves (optional) Cook rice well with ginger and garlic in 3-4 cups water. Add coconut milk and keep stirring until the milk boils, add leaf juice and let slightly boiled.

Seeds and oil are heavy and hard to digest. It reduces appetite and can help in obesity Rich in omega 3 Scientifically proven as a blood thinner. Can be used in treating atherosclerosis and stop development of blood clots Drukaghni- disturbs vision Shukraghni- destroys sperms Rakta-pitta prakopana- not good for pitta and bleeding disorders (nasal bleeding, heavy periods)

35 Properties of flax seed oil
Rasa – sweet Guna- light , sharp, sara (induce mobility/ cause diarrhoea/ laxative) Virya- hot Vipaka- pungent Good for paana, abyanga, vasti, karna purana and nasya

36 Remedies 1 teasp flax seeds roast on a pan, boil in 2 cups of water in low flame for about 5 minutes- IBS associated with diarrhoea Constipation- 3-5 ml oil at night with food Apply warm flaxseed oil for joint and muscular pain, non healing wounds and skin disorders Seed paste- to dry oozing eczema Burning sensation in urination- soak 1-2 teasp seeds overnight, macerate next morning, filter and dilute with water Enhance breast milk- mix equal amounts of powdered flax, cumin & fenugreek seeds. 1 tsp twice a day after meals with milk

37 Jasmine -Malathi- Jasminum officinale
Rasa – Tikta, Kasaya Guna - Laghu, Snigdha, Mrudu Virya – Ushna Vipaka – Katu Effect on dosha – Tridosahara Parts used- flowers, leaves

38 Properties and uses Vranaropana (repair wounds), Vranashodhana (wound cleaning), rakta prasadana (blood purifier), varnya- restore normal complexion of skin- skin disorders, abscess Somanasya janana- pleasurable Good for eyes- irritation of eyes, conjunctivitis, redness Alleviates body odors Vishaghna- antidote

39 Analgesic (mild), antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antispasmodic, aphrodisiac, carminative Aphthous ulcers, stomatitis, toothache, bleeding gum – chew few leaves/ boil some leaves and use as a mouth wash Infections between toes/ infected wounds – fry some leaves in ghee and apply

40 Jasmine oil Bitter in taste
Rakta shoshana- Blood purifier, vrana shodhana, ropana-skin disorders, scabies Reduce inflammation- arthritis Brain tonic Antidepressant – widely used in aromatherapy Increase breast milk- apply on breasts and massage- induce breast milk Induce sleep

41 Lepa (medicinal pastes)
Classified under kalka (medicated pastes) Ingredients grind with liquids/ available in powder form Apply against the direction of hair for better absorption Remove after drying. Leave longer to strengthen skin Varying thickness (1 anguli approx= 2 cm) to alleviate dosha/toxins - ¼ th anguli to restore skin complexion - ½ anguli
