12. Year 10 Course Structure
Students complete 6 subjects per semester = 24 units over the course of the year
All subjects have 5 periods of class time per week
New course structure for students will study:
English
Maths
CORE Humanities
CORE Science
*Students will then choose the remainder of their timetable from any of the KLA’s*

13. The Key Learning Areas are:

There are various subjects within each of these Key Learning Areas.
You can find these subjects and an explanation of what students will study within each subject in the Handbook, on the Lilydale High School Website

14. Elective Subject Choices
After the CORE subjects, students have the opportunity to fill the rest of their timetable with subjects from any of the Key Learning Areas we just looked at.
It is important to still consider a balance in the choices being made, in order to have a variety of subjects to experience and keep your options open as best as possible.
You can only select a maximum of 8 units from the same Key Learning Area e.g 1 - PASE KLA: E.I.S Netball =4, Fitness for me = 2, Body Systems = 2
e.g 2 - PASE KLA: E.I.S Netball = 4, VCE HHD = 4, Fitness for me = 2,
Body Systems = 2

15. Year Long Subjects
English and Maths are compulsory subjects that run both semesters
English semester 1 and 2 = 4 units
Maths semester 1 and 2 = 4 units
Students may also choose to study a VCE or a VET, E.I.S or a language = these all run for both semesters
VCE or VET semester 1 and 2 = 4 units
E.I.S semester 1 and 2 = 4 units
Languages semester 1 and 2 = 4 units
*In 2020, students will also study CORE Humanities and CORE Science. These will run for one semester each, so all up with the two subjects = 4 units*

16. Year 10 Maths Selection Students can choose either: General Maths
Maths Methods
Students will to consult their current Mathematics Teacher and get their approval before they will be considered for:
Foundation Maths
Specialist Maths
Students selecting these Mathematics choices will have their choice reviewed by the Year 10 coordination team and the Head of Mathematics in consultation with their current mathematics teacher.

17. Year 10 SEALP Maths Selection
SEALP students choose a Maths from the following options:
VCE Unit 1 and 2 General Maths
VCE Unit 1 and 2 Maths Methods
Year 10 Specialist Maths
Year 10 Maths Methods
Your Maths choice should be made in consultation with your parents and your current Maths teacher. Your current Maths teacher will be able to guide your decision with this.

18. VCE/VET Subjects in Year 10
Students may choose to study one VCE or VET subject in Year 10 - not both
There are a selection of VCE and VET subjects available for students to choose from.
Both of these run for the whole year, so students must be aware before they choose a VCE or a VET, that they are making a whole year commitment! This is especially important when it comes to a VET course.
VET courses all have an extra cost associated with them as do some VCE subjects, so please make sure you are aware of the costs, before your child selects to study one of these
The only exception here is SEALP students who have the option to study x2 VCE or VET subjects

19. Year 9 into 10 Student Course Counselling
By now, your son or daughter would have received a scheduled appointment to meet with a course counsellor tomorrow, Friday or next Monday.
The purpose of these meetings is to assist your child in looking ahead in their schooling and selecting the right course for them. They will be able to ask any questions they may have about VCE/VCAL/VET and Year 10 subjects and start to put a balanced course together to best suit the individual student.
We encourage parents to attend this meeting as well, to also assist your child with their subjects and pathways choices.

20. Things To Be Aware Of When Choosing A Middle School Subject:
Please make sure you are aware of any extra costs associated with that subject - for example:
EIS and VET subjects have a substantial compulsory cost associated with them
Most Technology subjects incur a materials fee
Once students are allocated to a subject they have chosen, it can sometimes be difficult to move them if they no longer want that choice. This makes it very important that students have done a lot of research, attended their course counselling session and carefully placed their subject selections.

21. How Do I Know What Subjects To Choose?
Think about the following points:
What am I interested in?
What am I good at?
How does the subject fit in with your overall study or career goals?
What sorts of things were discussed in your course counselling meeting?
Are there certain subjects you are required to choose for your VCE preferences or future pathways?

22. Course Selection and Timeline
Course selection will be completed using an online course selection form
Online course selection opens - Wednesday 24th July
Online course selection closes - Monday 5th August, 3pm
Each students will have received their own webcode and instructions on how to access the online course selection form via their school .
Once students have completed their online course selection, they must print it off, get it signed by parents/guardians, their current Maths teacher and then hand it in to the Middle School Office.

23. EIS, ADP and Duke of Ed Applications
Applications for the following programs are open and can be found on Compass. They need to be handed in to the Middle School Office by the following dates:
Excellence in Sport - applications close Friday 26th July
Athlete Development Program - application close Friday 26th July
Duke of Edinburgh - applications close Wednesday 31st July
EIS will also have fitness and skills testing as a part of the selection into this course.
Fitness testing - Monday 29th July
Skills testing - Tuesday 30th and Wednesday 31st July
** Please note - students cannot select these subjects unless they have been notified that their application was successful**

24. Information Regarding the Excellence in Sport Program at Year 10
Students currently in EIS at Year 9 are not guaranteed a position in the Year 10 class – they will need to undertake the skills testing:
This will run on Tuesday 30th July – Wednesday 31st July
Please note: Students not currently part of the Year 9 EIS program are able to apply for the Year 10 class.

This sheet must be signed by parents/guardians, the students’ current Maths teacher and the submitted to the Middle School Office.

27. What’s Next Tonight?
Please take the time to explore all of the Key Learning Area displays located in the Arts Wing, where staff members for each subject are available to talk to you and your child.
In 2020, a school trip to France will be running in April/March. There is further information on this in the Languages, Humanities and Arts rooms tonight.
The Middle School Coordinators will be available in the Theatre Foyer to discuss any questions you may have.
