1 Kansas Model Curricular Standards for School Counseling
State Board Meeting April, 2015

2 “School counseling programs are comprehensive in scope,
preventative in design, developmental in nature, and integral to the total educational program.” (American School Counselor Association, 2012)

3 Purpose of Standards Assist all Kansas counselors in planning local curricula and assessment for school counseling programs and integration of academic subject areas. Align with ASCA National Standards, SECD and College and Career Readiness. Incorporated standards of other states (e.g., Tennessee, Missouri, Iowa) and Kansas school districts . Adapted existing competencies. Connected standards and indicators to academic achievement and learning. Aligned counseling standards with existing assessed and model standards (e.g. math, ELA, science, history & government/economics and geography, FACS, 21st Century Learning Skills). Assist all Kansas counselors in planning local curricula and assessment for school counseling programs and integration of academic subject areas. Focus on ASCA National Standards. Incorporated standards of other states (e.g., Tennessee, Missouri, Florida) and Kansas school districts . Adapted existing competencies. Connected standards and indicators to academic achievement and learning. Aligned counseling standards with existing assessed and model standards (e.g. math, reading, science, social studies, Facs, 21st Century Learning Skills)

5 Social/Emotional Domain
Overview: These standards guide school counseling programs to help students manage emotions and learn and apply interpersonal skills. Standard 1: The student will acquire knowledge, attitudes, and interpersonal skills to help them understand and respect self and others. Standard 2: The student will make decisions, set goals, and take necessary action to achieve goals. Standard 3: The student will understand personal safety skills.

6 Academic Domain Overview: These standards guide school counseling programs implement strategies and activities to support and maximize each student’s ability to learn. Standard 1: The student will acquire the attitudes, knowledge, and skills that contribute to effective learning in school and across the life span. Standard 2: The student will complete school with the academic preparation to choose from postsecondary options. Standard 3: The student will understand the relationship of academics to the world of work and to life.

7 Career Domain Overview: These standards guide school counseling programs to help students 1) understand the connection between school and the world or work and 2) plan for and make a successful transition from school to post-secondary education and/or the world of work. Standard 1: The student will acquire the skills to investigate the world of work in relation to knowledge of self and to make informed career decisions. Standard 2: The student will employ strategies to achieve future career goals with success and satisfaction. Standard 3: The student will understand the relationship between personal qualities, education, training, and the world of work.
