Konstantin Yakunin, Pellissippi State Community College, Knoxville, TN POWER SYSTEM LESSON OBJECTIVES Refrigeration and Power Systems (College level course) Explain basics of an electrical distribution system Discuss critical components of a power system (PS) Create a realistic PS model using MATLAB-Simulink Perform simulations of a PS under different scenarios. PROCEDURES A realistic model of power distribution system includes: Power generator Transmission lines Step-up and step-down transformers Different Levels of customers Energy storage Analyze a behavior of the PS (voltage, current and power on each element of the PS) with a regular performance Analyze a behavior of the PS with a short loss of power OVERVIEW This lesson plan aims to explain college students the basics concepts of power distribution systems. Students will study a role of each critical element in a PS. Create their own model of a power distribution system using MATLAB. Students will perform simulations of different situations that can happen in a real PS. Loss of power Energy storage increases stability of the system ENGINEERING CONNECTIONS In this lesson students will learn engineering concepts behind power distribution systems and how to design a simple power system. Learn how to setup real parameters of the PS. Analysis stability of the system with different types of loads and scenarios. Students will demonstrate the ability build a realistic model of a power system in MATLAB. Students will be able to model different behaviors of a power distribution system using their models.
