1 How to find reference sources electronically
Do you need to know what something means? Feel as if you’re on a road trip without a map? Finding the meaning of a word or an explanation of a legal term, researching a case or a legal topic is easy if you have your passport on board and know where to turn ………….

2 Planning is Where all great trips begin ….
Where do you go…. If you are looking for the general meaning of a word like ”retribution” or… If you are looking for a brief discussion of a legal topic like ”family law” or… If you are looking for the meaning or translation of a Latin legal phrase like ”prima facie” or… If you want to know how a court case you are researching (like F v B 1988 (3) SA 948 (D)) was used in later cases or want to have a complete view of where each case has been cited … …Only when you know which road to take can the fun begin!

LAWSA is a South African Legal Encyclopaedia which can be found under Reference Works, Indexes, Dictionaries and Diaries Make sure that the relevant boxes are ticked Click on search

A NOTER-UP (also called Annotations) will tell you how a court case you are researching was used in later cases or give you a complete view of where each case has been cited In this example we are looking for F v B 1988 (3) SA 948 (D) or F v B 1988 (4) All SA 397 Open the contents of the Noter-up by clicking on the + sign and scroll down to F under South Africa Open the contents of F to find our example of F v B. The annotations are given underneath the case name
