Sampling Methods 9/16/2015 Statistics Mr. DeOms
SWBAT explain the purpose of and different varieties of sampling methods. SWBAT build community and understanding by sharing images of self.
2
What are the two categories of Sampling Methods?
_____________________ _____________________ What are the advantages and disadvantages to both? + ___________________ ___________________ ____________________ ___________________ What are the 6 main types of Sampling Methods?

Name 9/16/2015 Stats – 1 Sampling Methods
5
Vocabulary in Today’s Lesson
Convenience Sampling Voluntary Response Sampling Simple Random Sampling Stratified Sampling Cluster Sampling Systematic Random Sampling Observational Study Survey Population Sample Parameter Statistic Probability Sampling Non-Probability Sampling
6
Parameter – true value of a population variable. - based on data collected from the whole population Statistic - estimate of a population variable - based on data collected from a sample of the population
7
Sampling Method – how subjects are selected from population for a sample Probability sample Non-Probability Samples Probability known Probability not known Good for analysis Cheap, easy, and fast All parts of population have a chance of being included in sample
9
2 Main Types of Non-Probability Sampling
Voluntary Response Sample – Subjects self select Convenience Sample – Subjects are easy to reach
10
4 Main Types of Probability Sampling
- Simple Random Sample - Stratified Sample - Cluster Sample - Systematic Random Sample
11
Simple Random Sample – Population of N, sample size of n, all possible samples are equally likely to be selected
13
Stratified Sample – Population classified into homogenous groups, and subjects are randomly selected from each group
15
Cluster Sample – Population divided into heterogeneous groups, and subjects are selected from a few of the clusters
17
Systematic Random Sample
– Select every kth element of the population

Complete first half of Stats.9.Homework
- COMPLETELY ANSWER EACH QUESTION ON A PIECE OF LOOSELEAF PAPER OR TYPED. - USE COMPLETE SENTENCES AND EXPLAIN YOUR WORK. - IF YOU WORK WITH A PARTNER, ACKNOWLEDGE THAT PARTNER. - EVERY STUDENT NEEDS TO TURN IN THEIR OWN WORK, IN THEIR OWN WORDS.
