2
Today: Final reading of Unit 1!
3 pages, four questions. About how political parties nominate candidates. But first… Let’s talk about something controversial.
3
The Electoral College What is it? It’s not a school, it’s a meeting.
538 electors meet after the general election to choose the president and VP. To win election, candidates need 270 electors.
4
In 2000, Al Gore ran against George W. Bush for president.
Bush got: 50,456,002 votes Gore got: 50,999,897 votes Who won?
5
Answer: Bush WHY?
6
Answer: “Winner takes all”
National popular vote doesn’t choose president. Chosen state by state in “winner take all” elections that tell the electors who to vote for. If you win a state, you win ALL of that state’s Electoral College votes.
7
Bush lost popular vote, but won electoral college.
Bush: 271 electoral votes Gore: 266 electoral votes
8
Riddle (think, pair, share):
If advisories were like states in the electoral college… Could a candidate for Student Government get more votes than anyone else -- and still lose? How?
