1 Peter Kristensen European Environment Agency
EEA 2012 State of water Peter Kristensen European Environment Agency

2 Why is 2012 a special water year
Water Framework Directive - On the basis of the RBMPs, the Commission has to publish a report and submit it to the European Parliament and the Council by December The contents of the report are laid down in the Article 18 of the WFD: a review of progress in the implementation of the Directive; a review of the status of surface water and groundwater in the Community under-taken in coordination with the European Environment Agency; 2012 Water Scarcity and Droughts - Policy Review. The Environmental Council of 30 October 2007 supported the Commission’s 2007 Communication and invited the Commission specifically to review and further develop the water scarcity and drought policy by 2012. As a consequence of the White Paper on adapting to climate change – there will in 2012 be a review of the vulnerability of water and environmental resources to climate change and man-made pressures. 6th World Water Forum in Marseilles

3 State of Europe’s waters
Impacts of Europe's changing climate indicator-based assessment Water resources across Europe — confronting water scarcity and drought State of Europe’s waters How is it? (Nutrients, pesticides, heavy metals, ecological quality ) How much is there? (Runoff, availability, demands, Water Stress ) Time trends Getting better or worse? Pressures on the environment Climate change Human Industrial Agricultural “What is causing the problems?” State of Action on policies “Are they working towards target?” Regional climate change and adaptation – The Alps facing the challenge of changing water resources. Quality of bathing water — 2008 bathing season
