Compare and Contrast artist task
Using Frida Kahlo and your CHOICE of ONE other artist…. Produce 1 A4 sheet using text and images where you compare the work of Frida Kahlo and ONE other artist from the following list who all use the them of ‘self’ in their work Marc Quinn (Blood self portrait sculptures) Vincent Van-Gogh (self portrait paintings) Lucian Freud (self portrait paintings) Rembrandt (self portrait paintings) Tracey Emin (Self portrait sculptures/ photographs) Your prep: You must look at a minimum of 1 pieces of Kahlo and your artist choice Analyse the artworks and think about; how do they portray the theme of self through their work?, are the materials used similar/ different? What are they trying to say through using themselves within the work? CONTEXT look deeper into the meaning behind the work. Remember, this is a COMPARE AND CONTRAST task so you need to compare the artists work using art specific terms and highlight these words Top tip: Use YouTube to find video documentaries about your artist to help you to understand the CONTEXT.

Structure for the compare/ contrast piece: Introduction to both artists Paragraph analysing Kahlos work using art key terms. Explaining how her work links to self and exploring the CONTEXT of the work Paragraph analysing CHOSEN ARTIST work using art key terms. Explaining how their work links to self and exploring the context of the work. Comparing and contrasting the work of the two artists- use examples (images) of their work to back up your point Conclude what you have found out about the two artists and how their work is similar/ different within the theme of self. Artist 1 (NAME) DIFFERENCES In this part of the circle you need to list what is different about this artist compared to the other artist Artist 2(NAME) DIFFERENCES In this part of the circle you need to list what is different about this artist compared to the other artist In the space where the circles overlap you should put what is SIMILAR in both artists work. IMAGE IMAGE ALWAYS include an image from each artist to demonstrate your understanding of the similarities and differences, and to illustrate your points.
