At the heart of our subject we want to foster passionate students who know how to; Research, Design, Make, and Evaluate within Design and Technology.
Our subject helps students to build technical skills using different materials and processes and learn how design and technology impacts on our world. We want our students to be able to understand and implement the design and making principles; understanding the user’s needs, design briefs and develop ideas whilst being able to produce prototypes and evaluate their effectiveness.
These knowledge and skills are the basis of any career within design technology and we have a very long and proud tradition of a number of students going on to study various design technology specific subjects at University. It is important that in KS3 they are able to build the skills and knowledge to start this journey.
Students will study in KS3:
Design Technology (2 Terms)
Food Technology (1 Term)
Design Technology:
Students will undertake two projects throughout Year 7 and Year 8 studying:
Identifying and Investigating design possibilities.
Developing a design brief and specification.
Generating and developing design ideas.
Manufacturing a prototype.
Analysing and evaluating design decision and prototypes.
At the end of key stage 3 all students will have the fundamental skills key to Design Technology, giving them the choose to select either Food Technology or Product Design. We want to really build their skills and particularly within the design section, developing the core skills as early as possible in their education.

Students will applying the core knowledge and techniques of design technology to develop a passive speaker in year 7 and a headphone wrap in Year 8.
Identifying and investigating design possibilities of a passive speaker (Year 7) and Headphone wrap (Year 8).
Developing a design brief and specification.
Generating design ideas of their passive speaker (Year 7) and Headphone wrap (Year 8). .
Developing design ideas for their passive speaker (Year 7) and Headphone wrap (Year 8).
Manufacturing a Prototype of their passive speaker (Year 7) and Headphone wrap (Year 8).
Analysing and Evaluating design decisions and Prototypes of their passive speaker (Year 7) and Headphone wrap (Year 8).
Assessment
Ability to undertake relevant research, analysis of information, the wants and needs of clients and identifying the potential problems/opportunities.
Quality of Design Specification/Brief.
Ability to generate and develop ideas. Demonstrating their ability to address the needs/wants of the user.
Ability to design their ideas addressing the needs/wants of the user.
An ability to appropriately produce their passive speaker or headphone wrap following the development of their design brief.
An ability to further develop their design brief completing their design to a high standard.
An ability to deconstruct information, to find connections and provide reasoning for design decisions. Produce an evaluation which highlights the strengths and weaknesses of their design.
