Why Are Some Christians Such Jerks?
Questions

Why is history littered with acts of hatred and oppression performed by Christians?

Why are some non-Christians kinder and more compassionate than some Christians?

Why are some Christians filled with self- righteousness and arrogance?

Why are some Christians such hypocrites?

Some people ask this because they want to attack Christians and the church.

And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. John 3:19,20

Some people ask this because they are angry at God.

Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, “The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses' seat, so do and observe whatever they tell you, but not the works they do. Matthew 23:1-3

For they preach, but do not practice
For they preach, but do not practice. They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger. Matthew 23:3,4

They do all their deeds to be seen by others
They do all their deeds to be seen by others. For they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long, Matthew 23:5

and they love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces and being called rabbi by others. Matthew 23:6,7

There are two misconceptions about hypocrisy and Christians.

Profession does not equal possession
Profession does not equal possession. (Just because someone says they are a Christian does not make them a Christian.)

Salvation does not equal perfection. (Christians are a work in progress.)

For I do not understand my own actions
For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. Romans 7:15-17

For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh
For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. Romans 7:18-20

So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Romans 7:21-23

Wretched man that I am. Who will deliver me from this body of death
Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin. Romans 7:24,25

We live in the already/not-yet Kingdom of God.

But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
Matthew 12:28

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.” Luke 4:18,19

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; Isaiah 61:1,2

Hypocrites are in the church because the church is not in heaven yet.

How should we respond when we are told the church is full of hypocrites?

“Yes, you’re right. The church is full of hypocrites.”

“Well, you know, I’m a hypocrite too.”

“Actually, we are all hypocrites when you think about it.”

“Don’t you, on occasion, say one thing and do another.”

“One of the reasons why the church has so many jerks in it is because it’s the one place that acknowledges that we are all jerks. Through Christ, the church finds forgiveness for being a jerk as well as the power to stop being one.”
