1. The election of 1800 marked the first peaceful transition in power from one political party to another. John Adams and Charles C. Pinckney – The Federalists; Jefferson and Aaron Burr were Democratic-Republicans. The first two parties in America: The Federalists and the Democratic-Republicans. Because of the voting problems between president and vice president, Congress proposed the 12th Amendment – there should be separate ballots for different parties. The President and Vice President will run on the same ticket. Jefferson won and Burr was vice president. It was a peaceful transition between parties because followers/supporters of both parties wrote letters and did not have physical fights.
