Connecting YOU to the Alliance Wendy Schettler and Tanya Merke Epp Alliance Coordinating Office, International Centre for Infectious Diseases

Canadian HIV Vaccine Initiative (CHVI) CHVI Research and Development Alliance (Alliance) & its supporting Alliance Coordinating Office (ACO) Opportunities for Participation in the Alliance Overview of the Alliance Virtual Community (Alliance VC) Outline

Canada's contribution to the Global HIV Vaccine Enterprise Partnership between Government of Canada (CIDA, CIHR, IC, PHAC, HC) and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Began 2007, renewal 2010,operating until 2017 $139,000,000 initiative with approximately ¾ of dollars designated CHVI

The CHVI Alliance is a Canadian network that brings together leading researchers from the public and private sectors, as well as the international community, to develop innovative solutions to the challenges facing HIV vaccine development. The Alliance Coordinating Office (ACO) supports the Alliance and the Advisory Board, focusing on building and sustaining the Alliance, advising the Government of Canada and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation on research gaps, prospecting innovative proposals to respond to identified gaps and promoting synergy among Alliance members. 5 Guiding Framework: Key considerations Strategic priorities and investments of Alliance funders Strategic priorities and investments of global research organizations Energy, aspirations and contribution of the Canadian research community Canadas focus and goals

Canadas Niche Generate and apply population-level knowledge to drive vaccine discovery and development Strengthen linkages to understand mechanisms of immunity Leverage preclinical resources to test vaccine concepts Priority 1 Harness Canadas excellence in basic science and strengthen linkages with clinical research, social sciences and people living with HIV/AIDS, as well as with vaccine researchers outside the HIV field Priority 2 Amplify Canadas strengths in clinical research, community engagement and capacity- building globally and nationally Improve clinical trial and regulatory capacity in Canada and globally through community engagement Engage communities, researchers and policy- makers in clinical trial and vaccine preparedness Test HIV vaccine candidates in Canada Guiding Framework for the CHVI Alliance

Priority 3 Accelerate the translation of Canadas scientific discoveries Create opportunities to engage industry in advancing vaccine concepts Support researchers and companies in accessing GMP manufacturing capacity Ensure Canadian and global regulators are engaged to accelerate clinical development Priority 4 Strengthen and enable new and early-career investigators Integrate new investigators into the larger national/global HIV vaccine effort Increase training in clinical trials and population / epidemiological research Enrich training of researchers from Canada and developing countries Enablers Guiding Framework for the CHVI Alliance (continued)

Championing and enabling Canadas contribution to global HIV vaccine efforts Brokering collaboration among stakeholders Communication and awareness-building to advance ongoing HIV vaccine efforts Facilitating translation, commercialization and industry outreach Developing new and early-career investigators Priority Areas for CHVI Alliance Support by the ACO

Connecting You to the Alliance: A virtual community for HIV vaccine research and development CHVI R&D Alliance Virtual Community (Alliance VC)

1. What is a Virtual Community? 2. Why YOU should belong? 3. How to access the Virtual Community? Presentation Objectives

Communities of Practice (CoP) are: groups of people who share a concern, a set of problems, or a passion about a topic, and who deepen their knowledge and expertise in this area by interacting on an on-going basis (Wenger, McDermott, & Snyder, 2002, p.4). Virtual Communities of Practice (VCoP), without excluding F2F rely primarily on Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to connect their members What is a Virtual Community?

The Canadian HIV Vaccine Initiative (CHVI) Research and Development Alliance Virtual Community (Alliance VC) is a confidential internet-based community designed for researchers to collaborate, communicate and share research and to seek information about Canadas contribution to the global development of an HIV vaccine. CHVI R&D Alliance Virtual Community (Alliance VC)

The Alliance VC will help you: Stay informed about updates in the field Communicate with your peers Collaborate in private committees Engage in online learning opportunities Why Participate?
